Aww young Grasshopper.. many more question have you before you reach enlightenment....

the signifance of the "Ace", is indeed in part of the Ace Cafe, but before that, during WW2 the title of "Ace" referred to those fighter pilots of the British Airforce who were able to successfully shoot down 10+ enemy planes and lived to tell it.

The Ace Cafe, before it became the main hang out of bikers in the 50's, was actually called, "Ace's Cafe" before it was torn down for the first time. After it was re built in the mid 40's it was renamed, "the Ace Cafe", dropping the "Aces" part which was actually a very popular name.

Since it became the main hang out for bikers, the symbol Ace became synomosous with cafe racers...
The 59 Club actually started as a Parish youth group that recruited members at the Ace Cafe back in 1959...

Yeah I always figured there was a connection between the "Ace" in ace cafe and the Aces that flew fighter planes. And this is also mirrored by the bomber jackets that both groups wore... plus the whole idea of wearing patches, scarves, goggles (though needed for both) etc...

And I also assumed that the Spade was used because it is synonomous with the Ace.. I mean when you think Ace you think Ace of Spades right?

The Club...? All I can think of is that it is a "club" i.e. a group of members... Plus it's similar to the "ace" symbol... so it got used as well... But I'm sure there's some good history to be read about all this. This is all just what I thought up...

As far as the Red Suits... You don't see too many bikers in bright red... or with Hearts all over em (maybe on tattoos - I may just have some variation of a heart tattoo myself, lol, but it's black ;D).
And diamonds are too plain. Meant for seat cover stitching, not patches.

My 2 cents... No facts involved.

there are 4 aces in a deck of cards with the spade being the seniour ace, so ace spades means you are best of best, fighter pilots and airbourn units have used the ace spade to represent best of the best since days of bi planes in wwI.

ahh, i see! makity sense. i remember that one of the criteria that the air force used to recruit pilots back in wwII or maybe even I was if the person had motorcycle experience, for banking turns. (i like the connection to airplanes since my dad, grandfather, and uncle on mom's side were/are pilots . . . which i think explains why i evolved into motorcycles. ;D ) hmm, so it's possible then that the bike jackets of the day were modelled around the fighter pilot jacket (or were the real thing) . . . to go with the goggles and scarves... and also those guys who rode in the 50's were potentially retired airforce pilots then... ? and then evloved into the punk rocker/mod movement which brought studs and spikes and the such, hmm then maybe those guys, rebelious offcourse, had tiff's with the "proper and disciplined" airforce folks? lol!

thanks for the history behind that!

Sounds about right to me.

Interesting stuff. I searched for this because I was curious what the Spade symbolized, perhaps this should this be a sticky?
