clutch/ shifting trouble

i've got a '75 CL360 that is having a little shifting trouble. sometimes there's a big clunk noise when i shift and sometimes when the bike isn't moving it's very difficult to shift and finding neutral can take quite a bit of work.

what's the likely culprit? and can somebody who's never done it before fix it or should i just take it to the mechanic? i've got a shop manual and i'm fairly handy but don't want to get in over my head...

thanks!

Clutch isn't adjusted right.
You still need to 'rock' bike back and fore when stationary though.

i know about the rocking thing but occasionally the shifter seems to get stuck and i have to practically kick it like a left side kick starter to shift.

try opening up the right case, removing the clutch basket, removing the detant arm, then remove the shifter drum star thing and file down the neutral part of it to a concave profile about 1/4" wide, if you don't feel like doing that, just live with it... I think every 350/360 does that

Do you have rear sets with linkage?
Could change shaft be bent or have corrosion on it (usually that's only a problem on certain Yamaha's)

I've got the same stuff going on with my CL350, loud downshifting and occasionally pretty hard to shift once it's warmed up. Unless you ended up finding the source I'm thinking rockcitycafe got it, we just gotta get used to it.

most hondas are hard shifting especially when not moving. you should learn to downshift as you slow down, before you stop. if coming to a light learn to find neutral before putting a foot down, or keep it in first.

I'm using rotella 15w40, white bottle, shifting as I slow down too. Hey, as long as it's not indicating a problem the bike can make whatever noise she wants to and I'll be fine.
