CM400 side covers

Been Around the Block
Hey everyone,

This is my first post. I'm working on a 1981 Honda CM400 project and I have a quick question that maybe someone could help me with. Does anyone know if the side covers from a CB400T or Hawk from 78-81 will fit the CM? I like those side covers a lot better as they fit kinda inside the frame rail.

I'll post up my project when I get a chance. It's starting to come along nicely as I've been devoting more time to it lately.

Thanks.

This is what they look like:

Do you have a pic of the back side? I had both frames at one point and never thought to try the CM on the CB frame before I sold it. I am hiding all my electrics under the seat so I am ditching side covers. The frames were damn neer identical except the shock mounts, if you can get your hands on a side cover and try it it would be the best bet, Or is you are looking at ebay ones ask fro a pick of the mount tabs and some measurements from the seller and compare to the cm ones.

Cheers,

Thanks for the reply. I think i'm just going to order a set and see what happens. If they don't fit I'll sell them off. I was just hoping that someone had done it already. With my luck the mount points will be off by a half inch. I thought about making some cool side covers, but I don't have any metal fabrication tools.

As a side note: The people on this site seem to be really helpful and eager to assist others with info. I wish I would have found this site earlier.

Hey I actually tried this!!
When I started riding I bought an '81 CM400T, and my Dad had a '78 CB400A.
Long story short... they won't directly swap over. The top mounting point, where it slides onto the "pin" is slotted on the later model and round on the older model. And the rubber mounts that the cover "pops" into are in different places.

However, the slotted vs pin issue is easy to overcome. And if you know somebody who welds (even a shop won't charge that much), moving the other mounting points isn't that hard either ;)

Thanks for saving me the time and money on buying these. I may try to make something. Now I have a good reason to buy a mig welder.
