Coil relocation on KZ550

I've got a beautiful condition CB350 tank, I'd like to use it on my '80 KZ550. I've seen this done a couple times. Today I did a bit of a dry run to see what kind of fitment issues I might have. Looks like it fit on pretty nicely, the only area is the coils start to rub on the tank before the tank can be seated all the way. The bracket that holds the coils is fairly wide.
Is coil relocation a thing? Any advice or thoughts?
thanks!

Coils just have to go "somewhere". Feel free to relocate them as required. If you can make the mount less wide and fit the coils under the tank, that would be the perfect solution. As long as they are mounted solidly and do not rub on things, it doesn't much matter where they are - within reason.

Great, thanks! I'm thinking a little bracket modification might be all that is required. I also noticed that one appears to be cracked? If I need to get a replacement...I wonder if the Dyna coils are at all smaller? That could be helpful.

As long as the primary resistance is the same, a coil is a coil is a coil (pretty much). Cracked coils are not good - that pretty much tells you they are on their way out....

I've seen coils relocated under the seat quite often (with longer HT leads), but depends on what type of seat you plan on running.

Yeah, I was wondering if under the seat was an option. That would give me a lot more room under the tank. Also, on the KZ550 there isn't a lot going on under the seat. I'm thinking about doing an electronics tray with a smaller battery and maybe the MotoGadget M unit, and now maybe coils. Could really tidy up the wiring.

Regular Dyna coils are a bit on the fat side. They have mini coils but after I bought a pair I read that they are not suited to older type electronic systems. Bummer.

Almost any coil from the era will work as long as it's close to the same resistance and has two HT leads.

Under the seat would also work but my preference is to keep the HT leads short and avoid long runs over the head, but then again on my cars they are really long, so maybe it's not an issue. :)
