So I jave a 1981 suzuki gsx250 and i have been having trouble starting or running my bike for a very long time. Well since I got it 6 months ago I have done a total of 11kms. I have troubleshooted most of the problems. I have cleaned the carbs multiple times. Put a rebuild kit in them.
Currently the bike wont start. The starter turns over and I get spark if I earth the plug to the engine. But it wont fire. I have the Haynes manual for the bike and went to test the coils.
The manual says I should get between 3.5-4.5 Ohms on the primary coil. And I got 4.5 and 4.6 on the other.
And then secondary is between 23-25k Ohms but when I put the reader to the pkug cap and the low tension Lead I couldn't get a reading. So I removed the cap and attached the tester to the wire one side read 12.16k and the other read 11.77k what does this mean??? Any help would be much appreciated thanks guys.
If you did the procedure right, it suggests the plug caps have failed. I had a similar issue with my cb360. The resistor in the cap had burnt through. A spark sometimes jumped across, but the resistance of the cap was 2 meg ohms.
Caps are cheap, replace them.

You HAVE spark. I think you still have a fuel problem.
Try some Aerostart.....or put your hand over one of the carb inlets whilst cranking. I'll assume you are trying to start a standard carb set-up without the airbox? They don't like that because it will be lean.
Yes im now using pods but with the stock muffler. I have rejetted the carbs by going from a 117 main to a 125 main and raised the needle 2 notches. it wouldn't fire under those circumstances so I changed back to stock.
I also just put my carbs through an ultrasonic cleaner.
The end pf my spark lead is pretty scrappy though and I cant get a resistance reading with the plug cap attached. Could it be a lead issue?
you do not check coils with plug caps on....caps are either resistor or non resistor...resistor can be 2k,5k or 10k, bad caps will not stop sparking but you should change them. before clipping h.t. lead make sure it is long enough to reach the plug! you should also lube end of wire with a dielectric grease so it will not corrode in the future. if it has a spark when plugs are grounded it is probably ok. are plugs new? fouled possibly! do you have fuel in the bowls?

My bad cap was intermittent spark installed, spark everytime to ground off the plug. ....had me in fits chasing the miss....After replacement, I took it apart, the resistor was inf. resistance....Testing for spark while attached showed spark to ground....Should of checked resistance then, but seen the sparks to ground, thought I was good....
Problem solved. I got new ngk plug caps trimmed some wire off. Also got new plugs. Fired right up. My caos didn't have a resistance marked on them so I just picked up some 5k Ohms caps. If they were different resistance would it be a problem?
