Re: Come On Eileen!....MONO-PROGRESS!
Sorry, no pics to show the progress on the mono-shock geometry tonight, but it is
done. My fiancé had the camera tonight, bummer!
Anyway, after making three new brackets and moving the mounting points all around, my best figures came from the bracket I already had! I just had to move it a bit. The angles were very close to correct before but were a touch off. The picture with the MS paint overlay is just at a bad angle for you to get the correct angle of the swingarm plane vs. the shock plane. The angle was less than 90 degrees in that setup. I did drop the upper mounting point about 3/8 of an inch lower into the frame (closer to the ground) and ¼ of an inch towards the rear of the bike. I also raised the ride height of the bike another ¾ of an inch. All of that moving pushed my lower mount bracket towards the rear about a ¼ of an inch. The new setup come to the following: angle at full extension : 74º, angle at full compression 89º, total vertical axle travel : 5.25”, difference in length of shock travel from full extension to full compression : 2.25”. I found my flaw in figuring my rising rate % comes from mistakes in measurement across the arc. As I raise the axle vertically using the cardboard template, the error of margin is too great to get a true rising rate %. I was finding my numbers to “flatten” in mid arc then rise again at the end. My only figure is that the margin of error is killing that figure. I do know for a fact though that it is at a rising rate setup and it is setup at a progressive angle. Is that perfect? Well it is still a vintage bike, and I never plan to race it. I want to have some cornering fun on it, and I think it is far more capable now than before. I define that to be MY perfect!
PJ, none of my comments were directed at you individually, I respect your opinion more than most on here! I know we all have our moments! It was not a deliberate pun, but can I claim it now! ;D
A pic may be worth a thousand words, but this proves that MS paint geometry cannot be applied to a photo and hold any weight!
Joe, thanks man. I will let you know if I need something in that range!
Biker-reject! Get’em out and get to wrenchin brother! But know that if your doing a mono, wear you big boy undies and carry your big guns cause the mob will attack!
I hope this puts this issue to rest so Eileen can move forward! She has a long way to go, and I am already getting impatient! Again I thank all of you; this is what makes a project great! I hope when it’s all said and done, Eileen is even close to some of the great builds I have seen here!
Cheers
Brandon
