Crankcase Breather tube

OpTiCz

Coast to Coast
What's the purpose of the tube going from the crankcase to the oil tank?
Can I just put a small air filter on the crank case instead?
If so, does the oil tank need to breath too?

You obviously have no fucking clue what your doing and are probably destroying a perfectly good motorcycle ::)
Do you have a manual?
If not, sell the bike as an unfinished project or pay someone who does have a clue to fix things you've already screwed up

The tube going from the OIL TANK to the case probably supplies the engine with OIL!

Ok that was mean but I'm gonna post it anyway cuz I'm inebriated.

You're right, I don't know a whole lot about bikes, but I know enough to be dangerous.
Everything I've done so far I've learned from this board and others.
I didn't go to school to become a mechanic, or grow up around anyone who was one.
I thought this was a community of enthusiast (professional and armature) who like to learn from one another.
Perhaps I was wrong.

If anyone out there has something constructive to say, please tell me the purpose for this line and why it goes to the crankcase.
I took my oil tank off weeks ago, so maybe I'm just confusing my lines.
I'm pretty sure it doesn't supply oil, and was told it was for breathing so the tank doesn't pressurize inward.

+1

I could be wrong, but this is how I recall it being connected.
In my picture above, that's the same tube that goes to the top of the oil tank and is boxed off.

You can put a small filter on that tube. it may be a good idea to fit some sort of extension as a condenser as oil vapor can come out. Getting overenthusiastic with modifications can get you killed if you don't know what your doing.
I didn't go to school either, but, I have been doing this for more than 40yrs and seen a lot of 'shiny' dangerous crap built by people jumping on a band wagon because of 'fashion' ::)
The three pipes on oil tank are
1 feed (the short fat one)
2 return (the long open one
3 breather (the long baffled one)
Honda expected some oil through breather, that's why it's routed back to tank

I'm not doing it for fashion per say, I'm just trying to clean up the look of the bike and minimalize (hide) some stuff.
I'm moving my battery and electrical underneath the rear cowl, and swapping out the ugly tank.

I in no means know anything about engines, other than some basics.
I don't plan on ever messing with the carbs or anything else myself.
I'd be in over my head.

However, I do plan on and already have done other things from just learning on the forums and from local members.
Rebuilt front forks, made seat pan, rebuilt gauges, etc.

When I don't understand why or how something works, I ask questions. The manual might have nice pretty pictures, and where stuff goes, but I didn't see it explain the purpose of the tube.

I appreciate members telling me when I'm in over my head, and offer help , or tell me where to go to get something fixed.
I'm less appreciative when someone tells me to sell my bike because I want to know what the purpose of a tube is.

Thanks though for your second post that answered my original question.

How about I rip out your fucking ugly fucking heart and clean up your look ? Where the hell do you think you engines oil supply comes from anyway ? I may have jumped the gun here . I should have let you completely ruin the crank by way of oil starvation an then ridiculed your whole inbred family .
This is not a fucking convenience store where you can just walk up to the counter and get what you want at any time for any reason . This is a living breathing collection of professionals and enthusiasts dedicated to motorcycles in general and the people that can't live without them in particular . Buy the fucking REAL service manual even if someone has to read it to you . Quit expecting us to pay your way with our experience . And lest you think I'm a complete dick look at the reaction to my first few posts . You got off easy . Pete and I both teach but some dumb ass posts here demand withering responses ...

No offense, but I'll take the nice guy that don't know shit, over a dick who knows everything... Every day of the week...

I hope you feel the same when the 'nice guy' puts you in hospital or worse, plus, even a 'nice guy' gets really wearing spouting the same (wrong) shit all the time
There is plenty of free advice on the web, most of it is total BS (unless you want to know who sells shiny stuff?)
Without a basic understanding of how systems operate, your more of a liability to yourself and anyone who decides to ride with you
I used to make my living servicing and repairing motorcycles
It's not some dead easy job where you plug it into a computer and push a few buttons.
It takes skill and knowledge, a large dose of common sense, mechanical aptitude, the ability of lateral thinking and a reasonable high IQ.

That's cool man. I feel where your coming from. But I don't think anyone was spouting bad info here. It was a question asked. Maybe it was a dumb one? I don't know, I didn't know the answer which is why I was reading it in the first place. I see plenty of threads where some dude asks an extremely stupid question and it never gets answered, even though you can see it was read 50 times. But that is fine. Nobody around here HAS to help anybody. But when this forum works, help is given help is taken, pass it forward... It is just awesome. It is such a wealth of info and such a godsend to the newbie or the clueless or just the average Joe. So when that question comes that makes you roll your eyes... You can ignore it and move on, or you can help out. Both are legitimate ways to deal with it. But going the ridicule route just sucks. It brings the whole forum down. The newbie today, may be the guy who helps out the most years from now when he had some knowledge under his belt. That is how a community like this is built in the long term. Otherwise new members get scared away, and others leave for more helpful places. Nobody wants a forum that ends up being the same ten guys in a circle jerk every day. I am not trying to stir a pot of animosity here. I am impressed every day with the generosity of DTT's members. But when I read the first few posts it was a little bit cringeworthy. Maybe it was just busting balls...but I definitely felt for the dude asking the question.

Your image doesn't work.
Looks like you need to sell your computer to someone who knows how to use it :p
Just kidding, everyone lighten up.

Awesome, that's all I wanted to know.
THANKS kop!
