I feel like I have a knack for picking up the worst piles of you know what to try and do something with. This one is no different. It was pretty horrible when I got it. I only paid $80 bucks for it and the deal should have gone the other way, I should have been given $80 for the haul away charge. Any way I am going to do a full restoration on this one. I may put off the engine for a bit since we have a XR70 that nobody uses and that engine may fill in for awhile until I can tear down and rebuild the original. Here are a few pics of the mess.
Pretty much everything but the frame, hubs, upper triple, swing arm and gas tank(it's plastic) will have to be purchased. Some has been bought and since I'm pretty much done with my DS7 I'll start dumping money into this dump. This is going to be my neighborhood ride to compete with the golf carts and what not that litter my streets. I was able to pick up a very good speedo from ebay for very cheap so I was pretty stoked on that. New fenders, rim halves and street tires are here.
Thank you dude. I dig these funky little bikes too.
I got a few more parts today. Wiring harness, seat hinge bracket, swing arm pivot bolt and the long air box cover screw...small details. I may buy new bars and switches next so that I can close up the headlight bucket.
I put off buying the new handlebars and switches to make this thing a roller. It's getting there slowly but so far I think it's a good improvement. It's kind of nice to not have to weld, cut and grind stuff up for a change.
I got as far along as I could before Christmas season. I got the handle bars, cables, throttle assembly and a few other things. I'll start tearing the engine down while it's the giving season. I'm sure the pics of the engine will be a horror show so we'll wait until after Christmas has passed.
Looks sharp. Super interested to see you get into the engine! Spell it out so I can use this as a ct70 for dummies kinda thread! I've got one looming in the garage.
So it's been a little time since the last post but I've gotten busy on this one again. Took the engine apart and it was messy. Years of grime and found sludge and some light corrosion on the inside. Piston was stuck, shift drum was stuck. I took it down to split the cases. I have them cleaned up and have new case screws on order to replace the existing fasteners. The shift shaft was bent so a new one along with the kick start shaft is on order from honda. I picked up another shift drum from the bay to replace what I currently have. The shift forks have wear marks so I need to replace them. Bad part is that the guide pins will not come out of the forks. I'll post up more step by step when it goes back together. It was to dirty to be picking up my phone for the teardown.
Right on man, I had no idea this thread existed. Looks like we're both suckers for saving the mini trails. I can't decide which one of us was worse off when we started ;D
I almost bought a DAX a year or so ago. It was pretty roached the guy only wanted a couple hundred for it. We were about to make a deal when he sold it to someone else.

I thought about an 88cc kit since the cylinder is toast and the end of the muffler is stuck in the head. I wound up buying a used head only to find screwdriver marks where a monkey tried to pry the cam chain cover off. I could probably still use it but I'm leaning towards the CHP 88cc kit with the head, cylinder and carb. I was trying to keep it all original Honda but that may not be possible while still doing this for a reasonable price.
The CT's are rad for sure and it seems like they are hard to come by down here. I would like to find another one to do a custom build with a big Chinese motor in it that I won't mind thrashing on some trails. That's kind of the thought I had for a mini trial challenge. Find a cheap bike, get it running and reliable, take it on a long two or three day trail ride while doing some camping. I figured you could earn points for every dollar your bike costs below a set amount then get points for reusing crusty parts, swapping or donating parts to competitors and maybe points for every mile you do on the trail ride before a mechanical failure. The guy with the most points at the end of the ride is crowned Mini Trail Champion.
