custom build cost

Ya, I added up the first one and almost puked.....

... never again. :p

I'm looking at about $7-$8k all up for mine when its finished :(

I wanted to do it properly though, all the fruit, so its got some big tickets items (like TTR400 rearsets, Buchanans wheels, Hagon monoshock), even so I've made most things myself and done all the work myself to keep the cost from going into 5 figures!

I'd hate to think what it would cost someone who wanted my bike but had it made!

Depends if they have paid all their lives to have things done for them, if so then large, because they are used to paying big for everything. 8)

I wanted to build my own wheels (and still do!) but with cast sportbike wheels being $100 a piece, I think that might have to wait till next winter.

Started my build with an estimate of $6-$7K. I say estimate because I know it will end up costing more. Don't care it will be mine and part of my Kawi collection when I'm finished. It's all a personal desire to have what we want. Everyone has their hobbies/passion and these just happen to be ours. I won't be adding my total mainly because I don't care to know. lol. cqyqte, awesome bikes man! The GPZ1500 turbo bagger I'm building once the Cafe is finished has an estimated $15K build and that is just the engine work. My hats off to you.

They are the biggest cost on the bike, crazy. $1,000 for SS spokes and wide rims. No other quality option for fatter tyres though.

Doesn't bother me that I'm spending tons of cheese. It'll still be cheaper than going out and buying a 675. Plus I love watching my friends get mad when people walk around their brand new bikes to look at my 40 year old 350. And that was before I started redoing it.

My >$1,000 CB500F.

As it was when I came into possession.

We built most everything on it, down to the axles/velocity stacks/bolts/rearsets/etc.

Personally, I think it's wicked awesome for what I have into it. It gets far more looks than any of the new bikes around. Only downside to it, I don't have a back seat to give rides to all the ladies that ask for one.

A thread that's a sore subject, I have $9500 in my R5, scared to do a final tally.
I replaced almost every major component, complete rebuild down to the frame, added CDI, custom rear sets, porting, expansion pipes, powder.
And still not done....

Adding up what ya spent is like counting the bottle caps at the bar. You know ya drank it. You know ya drank too much. Ya know you'll pay for it tomorrow. But, in the end you're smiling, the girls are into it, and you're gonna die eventually anyway so have some fun.

True dat ;)

I paid $750 for an 82 GS650. Rode it for two years without putting a penny into it beyond oil changes and gasoline.

Now I'm looking to customize it. I figure that, no matter what, I will spend less on my build than I would on a low end used Harley. A fast, unique, vintage bike that I crafted with my own two hands is priceless. I'm adding value to a bike I already love and avoiding dropping $6,000 on Sportster. Nickel and dime me all day long.

I hope you love your build at the end of the day.

I just added up all the receipts for everything I've bought for my project. If you haven't done this before, I'd recommend NOT doing it. If you have done this before, how much of a slap in the face is it? My build was supposed to be a low dollar thing - I was intentionally buying damaged parts I could repair off ebay and I'm still a thousand over my original estimate and I still need paint and powdercoat! oh my head!

Need me to make you feel better? Ask jay for my bill! Haha

very true, but yours is also a great deal fancier than mine. I didn't have a custom rear shock made for mine - I got a used CBR600RR off ebay for $20, and that's just one part i did on the cheap. In my head my bike was several hundred but it's adding up to many thousands. what a kick to the nuts!

Don't sell your build short. Shit, knowing what I know I could have told you 4 figures by accident. You're crazy if you thought you were gonna get that running sub 1k. But you know just as well as i do, once its done no fucks ill be given about the $$ spent.

Time permitting, im riding mine over to the show tomorrow for jay.

then I shall see you tomorrow!

I stick all of my recieipts for everything in a "little bag of horrors" in my garage. I have never looked in it. I dont plan to.

I stick to a few simple rules:

Do it yourself,
Do it cheap...
Or do without.

My VTR1000F is an exemption because I just wanted it. It cost me $5k onroad with 20k miles on it, full road rego, good tyres & chain, new master cylinder and rear wheel bearings. Nothing needs doing.

My little CBR125R has so far cost me about $1100 with a years rego, new tyres, full system exhaust, K&N air filter and a few other small goodies.

Most of my bikes have been sold for a running profit or a solid recoupe of expenses, only one was a dead loss. I keep things cheap, do them myself or simply do without. Once a bike is running I tend to not mess with it a lot unless something is terribly wrong. Cosmetically my bikes aren't always the best, but they will always run well.

Cheers - boingk

I do it all myself.
I do it all as cheap as possible
It still adds up to quite a lot (at least for me, being unemployed) plus, a crazy amount of time
Major expense's are tyres, battery, tube to make exhaust system and drive chain
Small stuff, fork seals, carb jets, wiring connectors, tail light and alloy to make pieces, inner tubes, rim bands etc
Everything was purchased over several months/years (in some cases)
The REAL BIG EXPENSE was the equipment used to make most of the parts (but I was working when I bought that) Most is about the cheapest you can get though (Harbor Freight Tools)
If I put labor into the cost, I doubt that any of my bikes would be less than $4~5,000, except for the Katana, less than $3,000 in 4~5 yrs including buying it
It's probably cost a lot more than 5K for the CB360 I'm still working on 8)
