Cutting and welding after powdercoat...

Been Around the Block
So...if you spent a lot of time, money, energy and effort on your project and then came to the conclusion that you needed to cut and re-weld a part...how would you go about minimizing the PC damage and then re-painting? Are there any tricks anyone knows about?

I'll get pics up shortly.

I have done that with a spray painted frame...sanded down a spot, fixed a weld then repainted and even that never looks right. Powder coat will be really really hard and will probably melt from the heat of the weld even a few inches away. Im sure there are some emthods to minimize the heat. Marc01 may be able to give you some pointers. He does PC for a living.

Edit: Did you mock up the ENTIRE bike before you sent out for painting? I ask bc even tho it takes time it will minimize those o shit moments.

I did mock it up, but still managed to miss this somehow... after I found it I thought it would be okay, but alas after almost 500 miles I think its time to deal with it... somehow.

What exactly are you trying to fix? Shock mount? Seat Mount? Those are common ones haha.

My rear set mounts are off a cb500 and I somehow flipped them and didn't catch it. My ride stance because of it is to aggressive for normal casual riding for any length of time.

KBS makes a brush on frame paint that MIGHT look enough like powder to work bc you can out it on thick....but I doubt it will be hidden completely. What exact color is that frame? Is it a custom color or a standard?

its called "Pewter Bronze II" from Prismatic Powders - PTB 4435. It also has a Powder coat clear over top of that.

here's a crazy ass idea...would it be possible to recoat it the normal way (masking off everything else), but rather than put it in an oven.. maybe rig up a heat gun to blow/funnel heat directly onto the fresh powdered part? Kind of like a Micro oven to just that area ???

You can get kits at eastwood or harbor freight and they use a UV light to cure. Not sure how well it will stick tho bc PC goes thru a pretty extensive prep process. Here was my thought...what if you created like a strut or a plate that moved the set the few inches you need. Could even make it adjustable. Get it chromed. I think it would look ok. Might still look a little out of place but should be better than wrecking your PC. Im surprised no one else has chimed in on this...we have a few pro PCers on this site. Im just afraid the heat is going to reak havoc up the frame on your paint.

Not to stray from the topic at hand, and maybe I'm just foggy tonight, but if you're saying those brackets welded to the frame are 'flipped', wouldn't swapping them result in the pegs being even higher than they are now?

Clearly you know what you want to do, so like I say, don't want to stray, but am curious and want to make sure you achieve what you want to.

Tim I think he ran them off the back of the tube instead of the front...he needs them moved forward a few inches...I think.

The one you see in the pic above should have been welded on the other side of the bike. In doing that the more curved edge you see on the top would have been facing down and thus brought the foot peg down more and not so straight back like now.
Heres how it is now (a little more trimmed now than in this pic but close anyway)

here's how i meant it to be: (musta had one to many beers that night)

Oh i see...I still think bracket or strut is the way to go...move it that 2 inches

After looking close there is no way you could have gone forward with it. I just glanced
