CX500 "Bastardwing" - 24th June - It caught fire!!

Re: CX500 project "The Bastard Tourer" - Getting the seat shaped

Man, Staffy if there wasn't an ocean between us I would hook you up with all kinds of small parts and pieces.

For those mufflers- if you don't want to buy new ones, cut the weld off the ends and pull the baffles. Measure the diameter of the cones at every quarter (halfway down and halfway on each end from that) and get 3 steel disks to make your own baffles. Real easy to do actually.

Re: CX500 project "The Bastard Tourer" - Getting the seat shaped

Sounds like a good idea that. These pipes are so bloody cheap here though that i'm more than happy to live with the ones that are on here and shell out a couple of hundred for some newys down the track. Besides i don't mind the volume of these suckers.

While we're on the subject of pipe i'm thinking of black header wrap up to the emgo mufflers which i'm gonna do black also. Hit or Shit?

Re: CX500 project "The Bastard Tourer" - Getting the seat shaped

I'm not "visionary" like that so if you're asking me you are kinda SOL. But you would have to get every bit of chrome off the muffs to get paint to stick to them.

Re: CX500 project "The Bastard Tourer" - Getting the seat shaped

I Figured that might be the case but i've heard of other ways around it, certain paints and primers etc.

Another vid. Got the florists foam mounted and did the thing i said i didn't want to do...

Hey by the way Big R, don't let the ocean stop ya. I got a mailbox here ;) Seriously though, if you have anything worth chucking on i'm happy to reimburse.

Re: CX500 project "The Bastard Tourer" - New videos up.

Hey, sorry I have not checked this thread before! Your loungin post brought me here, I did not even know you had this build going! Took me a while to catch up and I just skimmed most of it. I am going to try and read through it again when I have time. I will be tuned in now though! Great stuff here!

Re: CX500 project "The Bastard Tourer" - New videos up.

No worries twisted. Thanks for stopping by.

Re: CX500 project "The Bastard Tourer" - New videos up.

Well the camera died last night so no photos, but i managed to get three light coats of high fill primer on the fairing. It's an awesome mustard colour and for a moment i started contemplating how the bike would look in that colour, but i realised that i didn't want to ride around on a giant block of cheese, what with being vegan and all :p
Gonna get onto swapping out the handlebars today and sanding back some of fairing, unless the wife makes other plans...

Re: CX500 project "The Bastard Tourer" - New videos up.

Aint technology great? :D

When I get a chance, let me poke through your entire thread instead of the last couple pages and I'll see if I have anything I can send your way. While I don't have a CX, I do have all kinds of small misc. universal stuff.

I saw you wrestling with the plug boots and wires and thought "I have extra wires laying around that are still pretty decent". Figured why throw them away when I can put them in a box?

Oh the irony of a vegan riding a big block of cheese, ha.

Digging the build so far man.

Re: CX500 project "The Bastard Tourer" - New videos up.

Maybe i should get the whole bike airbrushed into the texture of a big juicy steak?

Thanks Big R. That'd be a great help. I still have to order plug caps from David Silvers or Wemoto in england, then i need to find aftermarket cdi coils to suit.

For anyone who's interested here's the thread on the aussie CX forum (it's 17 pages long though but it covers a lot of the early part of the build which wasn't covered here). http://australiancx.asn.au/forum/index.php?topic=4864.0

Rodders and Steve F from here are both members too.

Re: CX500 project "The Bastard Tourer" - New videos up.

Pardon my ignorance, but does the CX take special caps? Or is it more of a preference? Cause I saw some NGK plug caps that were straight like that.....

Re: CX500 project "The Bastard Tourer" - New videos up.

Thanks thompson.

I think they are CX only Big R. Theres a long hole down to the plugs which makes em a tad difficult to get to. They're only 5 pounds a piece though so that's not too bad.

Re: CX500 project "The Bastard Tourer" - New videos up.

Tried three sets of handlebars on the bike today, one's too low, one's too far forward, one's too wide and the wrong diameter. I've got some ideas.... One set were straightish stock bars off the SR500 which looked fucken shit hot (i plan on building a cafe-ish cx in the future. I'm using those bars!!) and i'm thinking if i could make up some risers that would bring them up and back it might work. I'll mull over it for a while.

I got 3 coats of high fill primer on the fairing last night. I've run around it with some more bog/bondo in a few bad patches that turned up. Should be good to sand tomorrow and get a couple more coats. After that is guide coat and paint... exciting stuff.

The seat cowl is coming along nicely and the VT250 taillight assembly i found works a treat and fits in there. Will get some bog/bondo on the cowl tonight i think and start sanding it ready for glassing. This coming week.

No photo's i'm afraid as the batteries are flat in my camera and being unemployed at the moment the bills are piling up!! Can't even spare a few bucks for batteries. I'll get there. This bike's the only thing keeping me sane right now.

Re: CX500 project "The Bastard Tourer" - New videos up.

You're in luck buddy! As long as the mounting holes match up, I think these are what you're after:

60mm diameter

and about 33mm from center to center

They are set aside already, so if you need them just let me know!

Re: CX500 project "The Bastard Tourer" - New videos up.

Dude they are perfect. I will have to drill the holes in the plate where the old badge went, body fill the rest of the badge plate and use grubscrews with thread locking liquid. Should work.

Re: CX500 project "The Bastard Tourer" - New videos up.

Haven't kept up enough on this build. I like the look of the engine of these bikes. As for the for the tail section I'm digging the cardboard one. But that's only my o opinon.

Those deep spark plugs are a bitch to get at if you don't have the right tools. My civic was the same thing. Honda must love that idea. lol

Re: CX500 project "The Bastard Tourer" - New videos up.

Huzzah for the hemisperical head!
What about using low excitation voltage pencil coils? They are built into a plug cap and would elinimate the need for plug wires all together.
Well, once your funds free up anyway. If you're in need of small bits maybe post a list in your thread, I've got a pile of parts that might suit for the low low price of getting this thing on the road!

Re: CX500 project "The Bastard Tourer" - New videos up.

Thanks Swagger, we'd need to figure in postage too as i'm down here in oz. I'm really stoked that there's a great support network on the aussie CX forum and it seems people are swapping and sending shit all across the country. That's what makes a great site. What do you mean about the pencil coils Swagger? Got a link for me to get a look at? Jay Kent the cardboard tail section has now been replicated in foam with a couple of scallops each side to give it a bit more love. Those scallops will help it tie in nicely with the fairing too.
I was looking at the bike last night and for a moment i thought "fuck the fairing, where's them swallow bars at" but i've set a goal and i wanna stick with it. Very frustrating that i need to order a longer braided hose now so i can fit the only bars that'll go under the fairing... stock ones.

Re: CX500 project "The Bastard Tourer" - New videos up.

A few piccies for the hell of it all from the phone camera.
5 coats of filler primer on

The mess left behind after shaping the florist's foam

Which with the taillight put in looks like this

I'm trying to dig up some stock bars to sort this mess out. They're the only ones that'll fit behind this fairing. I also need to get another braided line that's longer to allow the steering to turn to the right without dragging the line on the fairing bracket.
