CX500 caffeination phase two 99% done!

hope your clubmans don't hit your tank
Ok guys, now that I'm back from the middle east its time for me to start phase two of the little CX cafe that could.
Got a lot to do!

-Chop more of the back of the frame off (and any unnecessary brackets)
-Weld brackets to end of frame for the attachment of a “back plate” to seal off bottom back of cowl
-Weld electronics pan to frame
-Weld new flat seat rails to top of frame for seat
-Weld up a seat mounting point at the back
-Weld up mounts for rear sets
-Repaint frame (probably going with “Champagne”)
-Create new rear fender (that sits close to the wheel and mounts near the center/bottom of the frame... similar to the red framed ducati from the Davida ad.)
-Nickel Plate Fuel Tank
-Line Fuel Tank
-Create a new seat pan
-Replace tail light with vintage “stop” light (only ½ inch larger than the present one)
-Repaint motor
-Replace fork seals
-Strip paint off wheels (TBD whether to repaint or to polish)
-Bob fender
-Paint front and rear fenders black
-Repaint brake caliper
-Replace front brake pad
-New master cylinder
-Steel brake line
-Clip ons
-Bar end blinkers
-New clutch and throttle cables
-Brown grips
-Complete rewire. move everything under seat
-Relocate battery to bottom of electronics pan
-New headlight
-Digital speedo/tach
-Figure out how to connect rear sets (CX clutch lever is at the back of the motor, not the side)
-Either get a shorter mirror... and/or put a mirror on the bottom of the front fork. (anyone else see this done? its looks pretty cool... don't know how functional it is tho)

I know it seems like a lot...
Buuut I only need two classes to graduate this semester so I should have enough time to finish it for May.
Now the only problem is gathering up all the parts i need so it doesn't cost a small fortune.

My biggest concern right now is how to get the color i want for the frame. i want it to be champagne... i.e. silvery with a hint of bronzish-gold. the problem I'm running into is that they don't make any heavy duty spay paints in that color (and powder coating is going to put me over budget). I think what i might do is strip the frame, coat it with self etching primer, hit it with several coats of one of the duplicolor champagnes, and then put a good amount of heavy duty clear coat on it. (I have one thats meant to be used when painting wheels... its not duplicolor though... would this have any adverse effect on the color layer?)

Also, I'm gonna be getting a sealed battery. Now its recommended that my bike take a 12v 14ah battery. These things are huge! would it be possible to get one with less amps per hour (and so smaller dimensions) and have the bike run ok? (maybe like 8ah)

Re: CX500 caffeination phase two

That's a big list, but it seems like these projects always involve a whole bunch.

Re: CX500 caffeination phase two

ok guys,
got a little progress today... not as much as I wanted tho, need to figure out how to turn the heater on in the greenhouse :-/

oh, and i need to figure out how to get my jack out of the shed... waaay too much snow :(

next step is to drop the motor. :-X

Re: CX500 caffeination phase two

Looks like this will come out well. The bike looks like it's already in pretty good shape. What were you up to in the middle east?

I think I may need to drill out the screws on the radiator cover. no matter how much penetrating oil i spray on them they still wont budge, and they're so soft I'm on the verge of stripping them.

Also pulled my starter today, and upon opening a whole mess of crap came out (flakes from the mineral that rubs against the main shaft I presume)
Anyone have any walkthrus on a proper cleaning? (the screws on the side are stuck fast, soaking them in oil too)

Re: CX500 caffeination phase two

I was looking at using clear coat that is made for wheels to top coat my frame as well. I figure it has to be very durable to be made for wheels. I say give it a go.

Re: CX500 caffeination phase two

I think the cx500 would look sick with a narrower tank/cowl. But then youd have to either ditch the side covers or figure out something to replace them.

Re: CX500 caffeination phase two

I found a nice paint for your frame. It's rustoleum metalic finish color is called brass something. Anyway it's a real nice champagne color and it will fit your needs and your budget niceley.

Re: CX500 caffeination phase two

k, more progress
I chopped more off the back of the frame, welded up some bracing, seat supports, and an electronics pan, got it painted, and now awaiting clear. (and boy are my welding skills a little rusty!)

first coat: Arizona Beige

shocks came in today...

bitch-tits.

one question though, is it ok to run the eye-mounts without the metal insert in them (using just the rubber ring instead) because it fits without the inserts, but not with

Re: CX500 caffeination phase two

You might get by, but it'd eventually hose the bushings. I think you're supposed to use your own inserts on some bikes..

Re: CX500 caffeination phase two

Theres no way I would run them without hte metal bushing, all that stress on the rubber is definitely going to wear it out pretty quick.
