CX500 PartII

Wheel is back together and off to get the tyre fitted this afternoon. These wheels couldn't be any easier to true!

Done, and I reckon a 140/80 17 or 140/70 17 would fit as well but I think this (130/80 17) is a good compromise size as the wheel still goes off and on easy enough and has plenty of clearance.

Battery is getting moved when I get around to it :) Couple of other things on the list first though like a new front fender and belly pan :)

Hey Steve, another question on the RFID if you don't mind? How sensitive are these units? I thought I'd hide the sensor behind one of the sidecovers, but I'm worried that it might be triggered by the keys when I'm sitting on the bike with them in my pocket? What sort of range do these things have, and how far away from your backside is your sensor?

It's only a few cm's tops, mine is in the tail piece and I have to swipe the fob right over it. The side cover would be fine and far enough away from a pocket. They have the same sort of range as the sensors in lifts to access selected floors and that sort of thing so pretty much a swipe over it is all that it will pick up.

Steve, what did you have to do to dismantle the wheel? What hardware did you use to put it back together?

Grinder to split the nuts down the middle at the hub end (split the end of the bolt as well took about 10 seconds a bolt), then I could tap them and they would split in two and I could pop the bolts out. Just need to be careful with the grinder so you dont nick the spokes.

For the rim end I drilled through the rivets on one side, smaller then the rivet, and then used a punch to collapse the sides of the hollow rivet in and punch it through the wheel.

To bolt them together I drilled the rim end and spokes at the rim end out to 8mm (Hub end is already 8mm) and used 25mm long M8 bolts (at the rim) with Nyloc nuts and stainless washers to put it back together. At the hub end I used 65mm M8 bolts and Nyloc nuts. All bolts are 8.8 grade.

Hope that helps.

Excellent work Steve. You need to get a mate with a gopro to follow you through there. Love to also see your bike from the outside fangin' around those bends.
