CX500 Rearsets - Tip/Hints - Ways around the shifter

jwdmotorsports

Been Around the Block
These rearsets are designed around the 1982 CX500.

Emailed the company to find out if they work on other years but he wasn't sure. The shifter on the CX500 is a little different so I thought it might be easier to buy a complete set rather than doing the fab work.

Anybody know if there is any difference between my 1978 frame and the 1982 frame that would keep me from being able to use these?

Worst case, the company is about 3 hours from me, I could drive over to confirm.

Re: Fast From the Past CX500 Rearsets

the foot pegs on your standard are not offset forward like they are on the custom

they are about 3 inches different

from the looks of the adjustment on the rods i dont know if you

will be able to line them up

also the standard has a completely different shifter the offset length is not as along as the custom one

i would be surprised if it would work with out a lot of mods

Re: Fast From the Past CX500 Rearsets

Hmmm.....so might be best to just pick up a cheaper rearset and do the fab work.
cxman, do you have any pictures of rearsets you've fabbed up? Seems like you always have a picture for any of my questions.

Re: Fast From the Past CX500 Rearsets

i would have to go find some on my back up drive i dont have any on photobucket currently

but go ask on the cx forum

Re: Fast From the Past CX500 Rearsets

they are for the 500 e euro model and wont fit the custom or the standard

as the euro has its own frame

Well crap. That was about the only CX500 rearset I could find.

Anybody on here that has put rearsets on a CX500, please provide any useful hints you have given that the shifter is a little different that normal.

the whole thing is a pain in the butt lol

i have done the job a few times it sucks

That's kind of what I figured. I have a couple ideas that are half formulated in my head. Interested to see what other people have done.

Is there anyone else out there working on relocating the pegs rearward about 4" for a CX500?
Im thinking of using some sport bike stuff and building a linkage and lots of fab....

if all you want is about 4 inches back get a set of custom foot pegs

and install them on the wrong side so right on left and left on right they will be about 4 inches back from

where you start on a standard or deluxe and about 6 inches back on a custom

I have a set of those, it never crossed my mind to try those on the deluxe... I may have been over complicating everything again.

Thanks a ton!

Yes exactly like that!

How does the shifter feel with working angles like that? I like the simplicity and lack of linkage set up. I was worried that putting the shifter at an angle so far back like that would cause binding and poor shift quality.

The bike is still on the bench but it's fingertip shifting with it. No apparent binding but yeah will be watching for play developing on the shaft.

That's my indicator! Will have to revise at that stage if it happens.

I don't slam the gear change so realistically am not anticipating much difference from the stock.
