D&A Motorcycle Salvage... (PICTURE HEAVY)

Hoosier Daddy

Earache my eye...
Yesterday I was out for a meet-n-greet with a bunch of other area ‘old-wing owners to Decatur IN. As part of it we cruised over to an old bike shop a couple of us knew about. We had a BLAST! If you ever in the area… or even remotely close… find D&A Motorcycle Salvage (260) 724-7055. They don’t have a website and do not do e-bay. It’s truly an old fashioned business. Calling first is always best especially on a Saturday and slim chance on Sunday. Dave has been in business a long time, how long? Well, in the ‘80’s I had a couple BSA’s and back then it was an old shop…and was the only place in the area I could get parts for them. Now that I am older and wiser, I was wide-eyed and drooling all over the place. 2 large two story barns, chucked FULL of bikes and parts. Everything organized and sorted it was mental overload! So even though I had my cell phone, this is just a TASTE of what kind of inventory he has. No picture is the same room. OK, well some are but only of the parts racks showing different shelves to give you an idea of the stock level in that particular room!) and each room was cataloged up front.
Work room to the right of the office / show-room when I started takin pics.

Had this on the wall…

Upstairs, One room of complete bikes, CB’s, Kaw H-1’s, a Dream and sorts.

Behind me were these 4 Beneli’s and 3 spare engines tucked in a corner

Along the wall was this stock CB350F just like mine used to be.

Speedo’s! Get your Speedo’s! Some only had hundreds of miles.

Sprockets in a hallway, (one of many!)

Exhaust in the stair well.

First of two aisles of tanks, guessin 25-30’ in length.

…and then thee and four rows

Seats were EVERYWHERE!

Fenders anyone? How about an entire WALL!

This tank hanging on a wall really caught my eye, black with silver sides.

A room of engines, lots and lots of engines!

Bikes, bike, bikes… rooms and rooms of them, and wheels along the wall. I remember that this is from the second barn.

Oh geeze ANOTER room of engines! And frames in the middle

Exhaust and tail sections

This sign was STINKIN HUGE and even more exhast pipes hanging behind it!

And then, in the top floor of THAT barn was a finished room like a museum!

… that had ANOTHER CB350-F plus a pair of CB-400F’s

All this stuff in the case was pristine!

Back down stairs to yet another room of bike, my God, by now I have lost track.

I am sure I screwed some of this up as there was just SO MUCH to take in.
Next time I go I am taking two things, a trailer and the CHECKBOOK!
Momma!!!

Woah dude! You guys definitely get all the best stuff over there... Seems like all the wreckers here have shut down pretty much bar one and his older stuff is shrinking by the looks...

I would've been walking around with my chin on the floor leaving a slimy trail behind...

Wow. Thanks for posting this up. Might have to make the trip from Chicago some time.

I'll PM you when I get my list made and am headin back. There was this one black GS750 engine calling my name. I will go right past Huntertown on 3. We could make a good afternoon of it.

How were the prices? Some of my local salvage yards actually try to sell stuff for 1/2+ of the 'new' price, i.e. how's about $100 for this crap old speedo? How 'bout I kick you in the nards and call it even?

Looks like an awesome place to find that hard to find bit - would be great if the prices were reasonable :) Might be worth a side-trip on a road-trip to Barber's from Toronto ;)

I'll have to call down and see if they have and kz's, a complete parts motor would be awesome right about now

They could build gobbs of bikes with just whats laying around. Ive always wondered about places like this which would make more money. Selling all those parts or actually making nice bikes from them then selling them.

Figure 3-4 weeks to put a bike together from salvage parts, at $40 / hour loaded cost (minimum) for the monkey to do the work and you're into huge labor money.

Even 2 weeks would kill it. $3200 in labor to put together a bike.

Hoosier - Does he sell complete bikes or parts? I wouldn't mind trekking up from Indy to check it out. Let me know when you are headed back.

Both, bikes and parts. You could definately buy a project bike and the parts to fix it all in one stop. I have been scheming a way to get back there ASAP. Need to re-hash the bike funds, or lack there of. ;)

My buddy Felix sold off a lot of his stock when he closed Ottawa Cycle Salvage. Everytime I go by his place I take the time to wander through his barns and marvel at all the bikes and parts he has. Its absurd. He still has several tractor trailers that havnt been unpacked.

Let me know when you plan to go. Is it open to everyone? My buddy and I were talking the other day about building up some 350 full fairing bikes. Wouldn't mind heading up there with a trailer and taking a look!

Yep Mothgils, it's a real for sure business open to the public. I grabbed a couple of his business card and finally got around to scanning one, here it is.
