Did you hear about the drug smugglers who made up a truck to look like a contestant truck and actually drove it through part of the rally in order to get around the border guards and police? Yeah, that happened. However, Dakar does kick ass.

I've always love watching the big trucks getting it! I am also friends with, and have raced with a few guys who will be running in the car classes, so I'm really looking forward to seeing how they do down there.

Ya, crazy racing!
Dakar competitor Lawrence Hacking lives in my town and I've done a few bits of composite work on his race truck.
A number of years ago, when he was still doing the Dakar on 2 wheels, I got to check out his ride close up and personal - wow, totally hand built bike, awesome fabrication skills of the guys who made the special bits.
Lawrence's riding skills are legendary as well and he wrote a book about his Dakar experience - a great read but don't know if it's still in print.
It would be neat to build a Dakar-themed street bike (adventure tourer?) but to do it right would be pretty expensive I think...

Love the Dakar rally. Not much beats it in "fun to watch" amounts. And BMW still makes one. I'd prefer the Airhead version, but wouldn't kick one of these girls out of bed either....Granted it's not race spec, but having ridden an Adventure all over the Rockies, it's more than capable.

I downloaded a Dakar 2014 app for my phone. Curious to see what kind of live coverage it gives.

It looks like a bit of coverage on British Eurosport. Anyone know of any live coverage?

I didn't realize that they were running the CRF's in the rally now. Do they add the low pipe to keep the engine cooler?

they need room for the gas tanks ;)
honda bikes are loosely based on the crf450x, some of the engine is the same that is all
all motorcycles 450's only in dakar since 2011

wow after 13 days and 8742 km the toughest race race is over
overall bike winner marc coma dedicated his win to kurt caselli 66
laia sanz finishes 16th amazing
nani roma becomes the second driver to win the cars and bike class overall
