Deacon's CB350

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

When you sneeze, do you sneeze pink? ;D

Looks great, watching with keen interest!

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

Ha ha, pretty much. I go back to work after working on it over lunch with pink dust everywhere. Luckily I don't have any hair for it to get stuck in :)

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

Before I finalize the shape I have to decide on a headlight. Will take a look around today for a smaller sized one that has a replaceable bulb. Once I have that I should be able to finish off the shape.

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

What about using an LED headlight?

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

I'd like to but unless they've come down in price since I've last looked at them I'd say they'll be way outside my budget. Will have a look though.

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

Hold that thought Deacon...... how much are you concerned about inspections near you? Let me find a link again and I'll post back here.

Edit: here it is. http://www.hdbright.com/hi-power-h4-15w-cob-led-headlight-bulb-for-ktm-p-579.html

And a guy on the GSResources bought and installed it: http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?t=219967&page=3

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

Thank you very much Rich, I'll definitely consider that one, never seen them before. Would save some power too. Will still have to source a headlight itself though, I have a 7" one but its too big for what I want to accomplish. I need to do some measuring tonight to see what size I'm going to go with.

No inspections for bikes here, unless it hasn't been registered for the road before, so no real worries.

Thanks again.

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

I just found that the other night. Kanticoy and I were talking about it, and the biggest concern would be the heat created (even with the cooling fan) around the wires in the bucket.

If it's any help, I bought Airtech's mini headlight recently. I had to wait about 8 months for it, but can take pictures and measurements if you need them. I plan on running an Led high beam in a separate housing, so I tore apart an old moped 6v headlight for the glass. Just another option......

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

Didn't realize they generated much heat, that could definitely be an issue then since they'll get even less air behind the fairing. I just Googled that Airtech light and that may be a good fit, I'll mock it up at home to see if that's a good size.

Moped lights are good too, will check out treatland.tv to see what they have, need to make an order there soon anyway.

You've provided lots of possibilities, thank you.

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

Ordered a small 4" headlight from Treatland, should be here in a month ::) In the meantime, still plugging away on the plug, getting closer to the final shape but still a lot of sanding to go. I've done the majority of the sanding to this point using a dual action sander but will have to start doing it by hand shortly.

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

I see that it is really all pink in the middle. This oughta be fun to watch.

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

You should do a time lapse and no sweep till you're done haha.
Looks awesome and I love watching the dust pile up underneath it.

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

I usually clean up the garage when I'm finished for the day but figured I'd leave all this until I'm done, stuff is everywhere, really piling up. :)

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

Looking great and yeh that stuff is terrible messy.

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

Wasn't digging the windshield part of the plug, too angled so I removed it and started again. I'm finding it very hard to shape the top part compared to the bottom. I think the reason being is that the foam is adding a lot of visual weight to the top part but when I build it the clear screen will lighten it up. Hard to visualize this when shaping though.

New foam added for the top section. Greyscaled the pic to help with visualization (pink was throwing me off )

Then brought it in to Photoshop to mockup what I want. Will print this off and bring into garage to attempt to get the shape.

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

Just came in from doing a bit more shaping and I'm very happy with how its looking now, matching more of what is in my head. Still find the subtractive method of sculpting very difficult. I have no idea on how sculptors can shape a piece of rock to look like David, mindblowing.

Anyway here is how its looking right now. I have the left side mostly roughed in. I'll match up the right side next and then find tune the shape prior to glassing. Shape feels nice when sitting on the bike as well :)

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

Lots of work since last update but doesn't look that way from the pictures. A lot of finer sanding to get one side the way I want it, pleased with the shifter side now and have it all smoothed and rounded. Now the hard part, to make the brake side match. Also, I left the top windshield section a bit tall so I can adjust later when I get both sides dialed in. Will also fill in the gap between the top and bottom with some plaster of paris prior to glassing.

Also picked up a small piece of acrylic so I can do some tests prior to making the windshield.

Here are a couple of pics showing the completed shifter side.

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

Nice owrk Deacon, so are you going to bake the acrylic and drape it over a glass mould and cool? I have seen that done but never tried it.
