Deus ex machina?

Easy to like their bikes, what do they sell for? Anyone know what some of these bikes have sold for?

Lotsa bux, but might seem reasonable if youre in australia with them. When a t-shirt costs $60 I kind of turn the other way.

Pretty simple to make your bike look like one tho for a lot less money.

Most of their bikes are SR400 or 500 based which can still be bought new down under I believe.

a 'lifestyle' clothing store and café that sells bikes on the side.

The bikes are OK but way overpriced - although they do seem to have a pipeline for get bikes registered that the average punter doesn't!

Do it yourself, what you gain in knowledge and satisfaction can't be bought.

Aren't they all? Build a few cool bikes, get some nice photos for the website and hawk the lifestyle shirts and trinkets.

The real money is in the accessories. 100+% markup. Profit on a build is more in the 25% 30% range, and they sell more $30. shirts than bikes hands down.

Not in Australia. They are still sold new in Japan and that's where a lot of them are coming from to be modified by the Deus crowd.

Last time I looked at Deus bikes they were in the $18-$20K starting range which is rediculous. Sure they are pretty well made, but that price tag is for a select few.

But that's what they are doing - building exclusivity.

Wow that's impressive that they can get folks to pay that steep fee. I guess it's all in the powerful marketing which I must say is compelling. Brilliant from a business perspective...

I just went to look at the website and I have to say that there are guys on this site doing the same and BETTER work than they do. A custom build with engine casings that dont match in finish?!?! A seat that you can clearly see the foam edges thru the vinyl! VINYL on a CUSTOM BUILT BIKE!! I may be a little obsessive, but when I do work for someone ... especially someone who is paying me.. I make SURE its perfect. Cheepest thing there is the $100 catalog!!

totally, I think they probably have hit "mainstream" status by now, the fact that they are opening up shop in Los Angeles. At this point it's probably more about the cash register than focusing on the details of the bikes. I still like what i see though... can't help that :)

They have fantastic branding. That's what it comes down to. The bikes are super cool but it's the branding that makes people pay the big bucks.

I can tell you, I remember stumbling across their site maybe 3 or 4 years back and there wasn't really much product.. It was pretty much just bikes.. So I think the "lifestyle" thing has been building over time.

it's understandable actually. Just like the surfboard business, most people doing this (building bikes) for a living are doing it for passion, not to get rich. Not much margin in a build if your gonna take your time doing it -- have to find different ways to float the boat.

Bang on about brand. Same guy who started Mambo clothing I believe.

The concept of an overpriced tshirt-as-a-billboard is baffling / genius, same concept as theses bikes in a way.

just noticed the deus thread. whilst i completely agree their bikes are way overpriced you guys should check out the deus bali shop. pretty cool stuff going on there. and while i have bought a few deus clothes (only when they're on special!) I think what they're trying to do with all the events they host and competitions both in Australia and bali is admirable (and a great marketing ploy for them /the custom bike/surfing scene). The deus build off competition was put off because of the council but im keen as to make the trip down there to check it out sometime when they get past the zoning issues!

motomoto... Anyone charging $100 for a catalog is not in it for the passion.
if your talking about their hardback book, I guarantee they don't make a dime off of it. Too expensive to produce, content withstanding - for that I can't imagine the expense.

Sure their gear is pricey, still this bike (and my brother) inspired me to get into/build cafes :)

I just REALLY want that overpriced fairing in the pic. I blame Deus and Cafe Matty for starting the drool wagon on these little Aluminum fairings.

Really like their range of clothes, bought a few items from them and they're growing really rapidly you can buy a lot of their casual gear all over Melbourne anyway.
I've only ever seen their bikes ranging between 15-20k, really expensive but beautifully done.
IMO if I had the money I wouldn't go near their range of bikes, I reckon you could save at least 50% if you bought a donor bike, parts as well as labouring costs if
you had know idea what you were doing.
Not to say I'm not a fan of their work I just think it's kind of stupid paying that amount...
