Did I screw my bike up??

So I have a cb750 and I was replacing the stock headlight ears with aftermarket ones. Anyhow to Pull the front forks off I pulled the front end of the bike off the ground by attaching ratchet straps to the to my I beam in my basement. I attached the ratchet straps to the handle bars. After having the bike up this way overnight I started to worry that this may not be the best place to mount the straps. So after getting the forks off I placed a lift under the bike to take the weight off the straps and now when I turn the bars it feel like it "pops" into place when I straitened the bars? Almost like the there is a detent for the bars in the straight position. Is this normal and just not that noticeable when the wheel is on and there is weight on the front end?? Or did I screw something up?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Theres nothing wrong with what you did.The detent you feel is from the race being beat up from years of being pounded by the suspension and the ball bearings are falling in to the dents. The reason you can feel it now is because the mass and inertia of the frontend when turning is gone. Do yourself a favor and order a set of all balls racing replacement bearings, then post up a help thread when they arrive and someone will walk you through it.

Before you do anything else just try and slide the forks back into the trees to make sure you haven't bent the top clamp. If that checks out then carry on with new bearings.
