Dime city rear hoop

WHich dime city hoop would I need on a 73 CB 500? I"m looking to cut off the old seat/fender brackets, and make a slim-line seat. My thinking is that I use a rear frame hoop like they sell then use some sheet metal to weld to the top. I wanna do a seat in the fashion of this http://www.bikeexif.com/honda-cb750-custom-2#more-13333 .

Anybody have any thoughts/ideas? I'd be up for something cheaper than the dime city hoops, but have no connections to a metal fabricator.
 
Try to finer a muffler shop. Most of them will have a presses they use to bend exhaust pipes. Just ask to see if the would bend a pipe for you if you bring them the material.
 
I wouldn't have the slightest clue as to how to give them dimensions for such a piece. I can rob the dimensions from DCC, but that doesn't seem right, and moreso I don't know which of their rear hoops would work on my frame.

What some people do is get a loop and then if needed cut it in the middle and add a short straight section if needed to widen it to fit.

What is the distance from the outside-to-outside of the frame tubes you need to span? What is the diameter of the frame tubes you have? How high do you want the loop to come up?

It can be just a flat U shape that you cut and weld on at an angle like the CB750 you linked to, or a more complex shape that comes back then bends up gracefully and over to the other side. Like the frame of the XS650:

These are actually in high demand as the SR500 crowd likes them to replace the abomination that is the SR's rear subframe.
 
I tried to find a muffler shop to bend a hoop for me and all 3 of th shops I went to said they couldn't bend a pipe under 1 1/2" I'm still on the hunt.
 
I picked up a hoop from another memeber here on the board. He made a couple of them. Check the forsale section. I bought mine about 4 months ago. Ill do some digging too.
 
I tried a few times to find someone to bend some pipefir me. In the end went to a local metal fabrication place and they kindly put me onto their supplier that did all if there bending for them.

They did a few bits for me (hoop, custom inserts, rear frame section and the remainder of the pipe). All for only $140 AUD.

Moral is: look around, there will be someone in your area doing this work, just needs some hunting.
 
if you have the original flat "U" shape its very simple to cut a 45 angal a re-weld it back together. I did it for my 360 but regrettably am going a different rout with my seat.
 
you need the radius or 1/2 diameter so they can set up the machine...write down the dimension between your frame rails, then only one frame tube diameter...
then add the dimension to only one tube diameter which will give you the proper diameter,1/2 it to get the radius ...for overall length just add what you think you need to both ends and then trim to fit......

if you want one made for a reasonable price find any tube bending shop....should be less than $40 total .
i have worked with these guys for bending machine tubes 2 3/8 160 wall! they do great work.quick and resonable...

Well I figure my SR frame is now as strong as the original XS650 frame the loop came off, at least so far as across the seat rails is concerned.

And while I respect the heck out of engineers and know that there are 1,000,000 things I don't understand about frame bracing and load carrying, when I look at my BMW R75's rear subframe that not only supports the weight of the rider(s) but also forms the upper shock mount, and it is bolted to the main frame with 4 small bolts, I tend to think the SR isn't going to suffer much from the conversion.
