Dirt bike USD fork swap - advisable?

I'm on the hunt for a modern front end for my XL500s city tracker, and thanks to All Balls fork swap thingy http://www.allballsracing.com/index.php/forkconversion I've decided on a CR125R front end - mainly because they're cheap and plentiful down this way. However, I'd also like to drop the front end a good few inches (along with a touch dropped on the rear).

Any reason why CR125 forks can't be lowered the same as any other USD fork? The XL500 is a tall bike, but I'm hoping the combination of a smaller front wheel (stock is 23"), and an inch or two off the forks will give it a nice street stance.

no reason the forks can't be lowered
but the hell with the "stance" you need to get the thing to handle well
if you drop the front too much you may end up with a real nervous handling pos
i would recommend that you measure the rake and trail you have now before the mods

Yeah, I don't want to push it too far for that exact reason. The CR forks have 12" of travel, way more than I want on the street, but not sure if I can drop it without reducing the trail too much.

Stock rake is 28.5 degrees, haven't measured the trail as yet.
Playing around I dropped the stock forks 2.5" through the triples, and haven't noticed any ill effects at speed.
Drawing things out in CAD to see if I can estimate post-mod rake and trail before buying the CR front end.
