Disc to drum help please

Hi, I have a CB450 '74 with disc up front and I'm after going to a drum. Gonna brat it up a little.

Can any of you guys tell me anything re this drum, it has an 18" rim on it - 450?? and would it be suitable to do the conversion??

Any help in this would be really cool...... :)

Thanks in advance.

Looks like Suzuki or Yamaha?
Honda didn't use the lug on fork much (some 175's)
What is drum diameter, it may be a bit small?

Hi

Cheers for the reply. The guy selling it says its a Honda 450?? Another pic below....The lug is a little strange.

I have chance of a 350 hub, apart from 4 less spokes does anybody know what other differences there are.

Cheers

350 is smaller diameter, not a good idea on 450
I've got a 450 wheel for my 360, I'll measure it later,I though brake plate looked different to the one in pic but I may be thinking of 350 or 360 brake (they are different even though same diameter internally)

It ain't CB450
Speedo drive is on opposite side, cable arm is cast/forged and , main difference, it uses a bolt and torque arm instead of lug on fork lower.
Isn't XS650 as they had vents and holes
Still think it's Yamaha or Suzuki, they both used the brake shoe thickness check hole and that type of fork mount
If the diameter is right it could still be worthwhile

That may be from a very early 450, but I don't know. It won't work on your bike. Check out my front wheel.

That is what you need to find. Look for a wheel from a CL450.

It isn't Honda. CB72/77 and CB450 are 200mm and 350/360 were about 180mm or so. That wheel si quite clean and is probably Yamaha DS7 with that lug. XS1 650 had a similar locating arrangement too. Maybe Suzuki though can't say for sure.

If it's 200mm diameter it's probably OK. I cannot imagine going from a poor disk to an even weaker stock drum just for looks. If you send it to be relined and arced to make it work much better it's a possibility.

Funny thing is that Yamaha racers took off that gorgeous but heavy 10" front drum and fitted stock RD350/400 disks because they were better brakes. Today a Yamaha TZ drum costs 2500 bucks just for the brake, and an RD front end is say 100 for something that doesn't look as cool to us today but works better. Back in the day, disks were cool and drums were boring old crap.

Odd how thongs change and how retro has gone from boring, dysfunctional and old, to cool and just as dysfunctional. :)

You need to tighten the locknut on brake rod ;)

Thanks for all the replies. They are pretty hard to find to be honest. I know a guy that says he has one, he's prob going to be doing the fab work on the frame......Better get over and see him!

Forgive my stupid questions I hate being a new'en!! Are those forks originally disc forks?

Drum and 18" front is what I'm after, gotta get this sorted before I get going with everything else.....

The forks and wheel are original to my bike (I think). It is a '71 CL450. At that time the CB450s came with disc up front and the CL450s came with drum up front. I think they used the same forks, but I'm not positive.

Also, my front wheel is 19".

Maybe the wheel off of a CL350 is drum and 18". Maybe.

Later forks are all the same, they use the 8mm bolt for brake torque arm or all 3 bolts for disc set up

Cheers guys.

Would I be right in thinking the drum originally made for a 19" rim would lace up to an 18" ok.
Just was thinking re the angle of the spoke will be tighter to the drum if you know what I mean....or am I over thinking it a bit. ;D

Correct. Should work as long s the rim was drilled for similar sized hub.

Thats great guys I know where I'm going now!

Refurb the 2 Hubs, powder them and the rims, re spoke, new Cokers I think. Fork rebuild less 40-50mm, frame work, engine build......wow lots to do.....hopefully back on the road 2013!! :)

Thanks again chaps.

Good to see you ditching the disc brake and going drum.
