DIY exhaust

Hello All,

OK, '79 XS650. I'm going to be fabing my own exhaust (1 3/4" tubing) and I need to know a few things:

1. Do i need/should i have the Headpipe Torque Inserts sold through MikesXS for "better low end torque"? I don't mind buying them if they're more substance than gimmick.
2. How do you attach the pipes to the heads? Is there a "ring" welded on to the outside of the pipes for the flange to "bite" on to?

New Motorcycle builder here, so this may be a very stupid question, so when you're finished laughing, if you want to say something about there being no such thing as a stupid question that would be appreciated.

I've never heard of torque inserts, but from the site it looks like they are just a remedy for installing too large of a pipe on the bike.

I don't really know what you mean when you're asking how to attach them. There's a flange that bolts to the two studs, the pipe extends further than that flange into the head and there's a crush washer (often a hollow copper ring) in there that seals it all up... by crushing. The seal does not happen at the flange, but rather at the end of the pipe.

Take yours' apart and recreate what you see.

1.75" is too big, 1.5" is what you need
You'll have to fabricate some flanges, thick wall pipe will probably work, about 1" long (slide it over pipe you use and weld in position)
If you use the 1.75" you will need the torque inserts and maybe restrictors at the outlet.
Are you doing a big bore motor?

You need to be here for XS650 information

Thanks guys,

crazypj, so 1.5" it is.
Any ideas about whether to go 2-into-1 and one muffler or two separate mufflers. I'm looking for nice sound without being obnoxiously loud.

Like I said this is all new to me so any advice/thoughts are more than welcome.
