Used a scrap piece (sleeve & cable) from mt. bike- forward cable to throttle grip - cut end off leaving 2 inches

cable connect dims

use solder to make a ball on the end of the cable - at my setting the throttle has 3/8" play forward roll. I like it to have a little play. If you don't then shorten the cable gradually till you have taken up the slop

now dremel your ball till it looks smooth and square so it doesn't pull through.

Now re-assemble all cables and check and make sure your throttle moves freely and that the slides in the carb are seated

Seems to me that the cable end (the ball made from solder) won't hold up to the tastk. I would rather buy the $20 cable just ot be on the safe side.

Hmm... Solder is pretty soft stuff. If yr going the DIY route, you might consider picking up some brass cable end barrels:

Available from Dime City Cycles:

Yeah. You know what really sucks? Breaking down miles from home, where there is no cell service, because a part you jimmied quit. If you need custom cables its worth the investment of going to a shop capable of making them up for you. Do what you want... just my opinion.

Haha yeah ain't that the truth.

I had to push my bike like a mile to the nearest exit on the interstate. It's a real bitch!

Don't be cheap and half ass things that will get you stranded if they break. Solder matrial is really too soft.

easy to make cables correctly once you learn the basics that will be as good or stronger than mechanically crimped ones .......but a ball of solder on the end is half arse, sorry.
a new brass cable end is about 25 cents, or go to a hobby store and buy a brass tube or rod and make your own...

Solder may be strong enough for throttle cables but no way strong enough for clutch or brake cable.

You guys are toooo funny. This is my 5th throttle cable i've done and no probs since. The tension on a throttle slide is very little. Brakes and clutches is a stupid idea to make it like this. In alaska parts are hard to find and getting it shipped here costs the same as new cost of a cable. F-it.....as long as i'm riding.

well you could do hundreds of them and not have a failure....you can take nuts off with a cold chisel and hammer too, the point were trying to make is there is a right way and a wrong way and it's only a 25 cent part...hell you should have just tied it in a knot! haha

I've made my own throttle cables for yars and never had one fail.
I do use a brass nipple though.
Use silver solder on clutch and brake cables, (damn expensive stuff, $30.00+ a pound)

I may not be the world class builder but to say "I built it" means more. Yeah cheap/inexpensive or whatever, I am still a novice willing to make mistakes and learn from them. If you have access to parts and are willing to spend large amounts of money then more power to you. Alot of people do not and to get a tip that might help those in need can keep tires rolling. If your love for 2 wheels is true then thanks for the info if not keep me posted.

I don't see anything wrong with this technique on a throttle cable. As stated earlier no way would I use it for a brake or clutch cable though. Use the skills and resources that you've got!

Like I said before, I am more than willing to except advice and apply it to everything I do. So I did take his advice and had a friend that is an aicraft mech and had him correct it w/ proper materials. To learn is my objective and the outcome is everlasting. Thanks all and keep giving me the helpful advice so I can build like the rest of them.

I've had aftermarket pre-made throttle cables fail which is why I started making my own
Factory ones have always been good except when they were left standing and rusted out.
About the only thing that would probably make solder 'blob' stronger would be weave some copper wire in there before soldering?
I've made nipples more than once though, piece of brass, power drill and a file (and 1/16" drill for the hole)
Drill hole before filing anything down though ;)

Having your own cable kit is great if you use it enuff. You could make it pay for itself by telling other people you know who work on their rides that you can make custom cables. I'm one of those that feel if I made it and it brakes.. stupid me. If someone else made it and I paid them for it, I'M PISSED! So I can understand why you would want to make your own.

I love this forum because of guys like you. You had an idea, went at it, and shared it. Thanks!! everyone on here is awesome for that reason. So heres a link for you. You may find something that helps.

SALLGOODGUY - thanks for the extra web info...I have been riding motorized anything since the age of 9 and bought my own bike at age 12(kx80). I havealways loved 2 whls but never like this. Doing my first bobber in '08 than building a 2nd bobber in '09/'10 and now a cafe. I learned alot and still is but the love for this type of bike is stronger each time I get involved. DTT Ace Cafe and the history is what makes us. My dream bike is a Trump, BSA, or Norton that I might own some day.

I get my stuff from Flanders Cables http://www.flanderscables.com/

Have been making or modifying cables for yonks now including clutch and brake. The trick is to splay the cable ends and make a birds nest that can't pull back through the nipple.
