Doing the ton

I know this thread has probably existed in the past but...

Post here if you have done the ton on your cafe, and if you have any story to go along with it!

I've only done the ton in my cage, and thats not really a big achievement :p

not on a cafe, but i've done the ton (ton*1.25?) on two of my past bikes (04 suzuki gsxr600, 03 kawasaki zx12r)

on a racetrack, of course.

Is this for real? The dotheton name of this site is not enough to encourage or make us want to at least go that fast? I don't recomend anyone driving nor riding at these speeds normally or on regular basis. But I am sure many here did not take their bikes to the track to see how fast their bikes can go.

121 MPH was my top speed on my 82 seca (no i did not ride this fast for miles on end, I just took it up to that speed for a bit and backed off)
110mph on my 88 b2200

Doing the ton isn't a smart thing to do.

that's a hasty generalization

proper time, place, safety equipment, experience, and skill are required

the clock on my bike only goes to 85. need to replace it (among a myriad of other things) before i do the ton

Ton on my '02 Bandit 600. Ton on my '02 BMW R1150R. Pretty sure I was close on the CB450...speedo wasn't working, and I relied on a buddy to indicate speed on his Z750. I am sure I will hit it on the CB750 as soon as it is tagged. Always with proper gear, never legally.

been 120+ (so it said on the speedo) on my old '79 kz650. that bike was clean, in perfect tune, and not stock. LOT of wind to deal with at that speed...(whether it was anywhere near actual mph is another topic)

been 135+ on a pal's v-max when i was much younger and 'invincible'. that was so fast, i didn't have time to think about it.

haven't been to the max speed on my '72 cb350 twin, but i have had it for a mile or so at WOT on a windy day. i'd say i was going close to 90 honest mph. i need to get my front-end suspension sorted before i do that again. :)

Don't be too quick yourself to think that I don't know the proper conditions in which this can be achieved.

So here's my story when i got my Seca at 119MPH the first time (very dumb) was riding with my buddy (he owns a 03 CBR600RR) and were on I85. trafic wasn't heavy, temperature in the 70's (yeah, very nice) We were just cruising whe I suddenly got the itch to go fast. Then I turned the throttle all the way and started to approach 90MPH.

Oh yeah, before I forget. I had recently bought a cheap Brembo Knock off Master Cylinder and installed a few days prior to this. The brakes were so bad you literally had to pump the handle to build pressure otherwise the lever would almost touch the grips.

Anyhow, I was approaching 90MPH when I looked in my rearview mirror and my buddy wasn't there anymore, "where did he go?" I wondered, then ............ZOOOOOOOOM.....he flys by me as if I was standing still. So I droped the bike in fourth gear, red lined it, and then to fith, my speedometer (at the time it was stock) was pinched at above 85MPH I was still climbing in speed, then someone cut my friend off, he hit his brakes, his CBR nicely slows down , I hit my brakes (oh crap, no brakes) it barely slows my bike down. All traffic is now going 80mph and I barely missed my friends CBR, I barely reacted to down shift then started to pump my brakes and slowed it down in time before I hit a Mercedes Benz in front of us. He later told me after we got off the highway that I was going at least 119mph when I was aproaching him before he got cut off. I was like really? This 28 year old bike? HMMM. the following week I bought a set of Mike's XS gauges installed them....and been hitting the ton ever since (well every now and then)

Cheers!

My cb750 hits the ton regularly as I have a two mile straight away of beach highway a right hand turn away from my house. I've been nearly hit by a seagull at around 100. I can not however, commit to her top speed. I've had her to 109 and she had some more, but that reached my comfort limit with my bike for now. When I get a front brake on and working properly maybe I'll reattempt to reach my bike's top speed.

I actually did it accidentally, but not on a cafe...it was the day I bought my 77 GL1000. I was heading home, just after picking it up, going north on I79, crusing along, or so I thought. The highway was empty, so I hadn't realized that I was going 113 or so, until I glanced down at the speedo. I immediately let off, knowing that police tend to sit on that stretch. Since then, I've been tempted to see exactly how fast it will go, but haven't had the balls to test it out. I'm regularly going 80-90 on highways, without even trying. That shaft drive really responds to quick accelerating.

Not on my CX500 and probably never will ::) but I did have a GSXR750 built buy a local racer to Aussie super bike specs and it hit 170MPH on a track with me riding. It felt rock solid at that speed.

Cheers
Steve

17 years old, my best friend and I had just passed the riding portion of the test and were finally allowed to ride on the interstate, so of course we took that route home and just pegged the throttles. I don't recall how fast we got 'em but it was well past the ton. I had a GS500e, he was on a Seca 550. Good times.

Been there lots of times on lots of bikes, but I never hold it there for very long. I like to blast off an on-ramp, hit 100, then settle down to something closer to legality.

hit 162 on my cbr on public free way! took a long time to get that fast. damn near stupidest thing I have ever done. That was the last time I rode that bike on the roads. Strictly track for that bike since!!

That's a great shot PJ. But how'd you get the shot? If you snapped it with one hand while doing the ton, that truly is crazy.

I'd think with modern tires, previously known working brakes (as in not installing a new master cylinder right before the run), well tuned and rebuilt suspension, and full gear, doing 100mph on an old bike really isn't as stupid as you could get.

I wouldn't want to do it in traffic or on anything but a very smooth, wide and empty highway.

I've done much more stupid things, and although I don't think I'm going to rush to the ton as a new rider on an old bike, it is a realistic future goal.

I've done it two-up on my 1975 BMW R75/6. And more than once solo. Not on a race track. Frankly, going 80mph on the 401 highway on my commute to work or 110 on a lonely straight stretch of wide open dry highway seems about the same to me.

Ha! Herm doesn't know it but I did the TON on one of his Cafe's... Shhhhhhhhhh. :)

Done the ton on every bike I have owned that was capable of doing it. Also did the ton here......

There is not much that you dream of as a kid and actually get to do as an adult, but that was on the list for me.....
