DR650CR????!!!??

Here is where I am as of this afternoon. The frame still needs the down tubes up from the swing arm pivot area to the rear shock mount area and a couple of cross tubes, I am pleased with how it is turning out and the proportions of it. The XR rear wheel is gone, it was too narrow. I am now running DRZ400SM wheels front and rear, I should have more than enough rubber now :).

For a little more back story, check out the link in my sig. I will try to do a better job of updating this thread from now on.

He is a doodle I did in paint. Let me know what you guys think. Feel free to make any adjustments. I am fairly happy with the proportions but am open to suggestion.

I had a pretty productive day in the garage. First off I had to get the spacers for the rear wheel situated so I could finalize shock placement. Did that with good result. I marked everything up and got the down tubes that will form part off the shock mounts tacked in. Shit was going good so I started thinking about the gas tank. I took an old Rickamn Micro Metisse tank and chopped it up. Unfortunately I do not have the skills to weld on 20gage steel with any kind of success so I called it a night. More practice is in order. Here a few pics of where she is now.

the tube with the red magnet under it is just sitting there for reference.

looking great! Very original and nice quality.

what welder setup are you running? Mig with CO2/argon?

Thanks man.

I wish it was anything that sophisticated, it is just a flux core jobbie from Harbor Freight. The frame is just heavy tacked right now. I will either borrow a welder or have one of my friends do the finish work. There is just too much clean up with the flux core.

convert it to accept gas if you can... youll be able to weld much thinner guage steel, and youll be able to weld alloy if you choose. also welds just come out wayyy cleaner with little slag. ;)

Unfortunately when I bought it I could only afford the cheapie no gas option model. I spend more time screwing around with it trying to get it to weld properly than actually welding. I may go pick up a proper mig and be done with it.

The one i got from horrible freight was on sale for 150 and its dual mig. Might be worth keeping an eye out for. I think the coupon I have is expired.

Thompson, could you PM me the model number and which regulator you are using etc. You seem to get pretty good results with yours.

Made much progress today and am very pleased. The frame is all welded up and rolling around on it's own wheels. Everything came out as planned, the proportions are all in line and it looks bad ass. Pictars;

Looks great, and it is awesome that it is so light! One thing that looks like it may be a problem for you is the upper frame rails look REALLY wide! Is that not going to create an uncomfortable seating position? Seems like it would be kind of difficult and very uncomfortable to hold the bike standing at a stop, and the inside of your thighs will have to straddle that wide gap. If the ride height is low enough it may not be an issue, but if your seat height at full sag is over like 25", I think you will find that width a bit much!

Not trying to be a nay-sayer, just making an observation to offer help. I hope it works out as I have been interested in this project since day one! Good luck, and keep updating!

that is awesome!!! i would recomend adding in some bracing as well to the frame that you welded up for the back bone, i agree that is aufully wide bud, will be a pain to throw your weight around and rip turns, try tapering it in, then brace the hell out of it! very cool man!

I'm kicking myself for getting rid of my XR650R.... :-\

Cool ideas here man! Keep 'em up!

Thanks for the remarks fellas.

There are a couple more tubes to throw in there, specifically spanning the two sides of the frame, diagonally not like a ladder.

The seat rails are not uncomfortably far apart, and it is no worse than a wideline featherbed. The low seat height certainly helps in this. Also, I need wide rails for my wide ass. :) Besides, it is not for touring.

man... if i get anyhting modern, im going to get a supermoto and just rip around on it ;D

Some more tubes. I think anymore will be overkill. The only thing I am contemplating adding would be a tube between the shock mounts. After that is decided, I need to clean up all of the slag form the flux core and I'll call the frame done. :)
