Drive chain replacement

Okay, time to change the drive chain on the SR500. The manual is clear enough for the sprockets but how about the chain itself? Out of the package, it's greased up really good so do I soak it in thinner, like mineral spirits, to remove the grease and then relube after installation? Or are there better ways to insure a long life? Any tricks or tips to make the installation as painless as possible? Any advice would be appreciated.

the lube issue is personal taste... if you LOVE your current lube system then clean the packing grease off with something... kerosene is a good choice as it doesn't eat the o-rings in the chain, and put your fave lube on. i confess i usually just run new chains with the grease they're packed in and then go to my fave when the next lube interval comes (i use amsoil heavy duty metal protectant). is it a clip or rivet masterlink? if it's a clip, remember the closed part of the clip faces the way the chain travels. if it's a rivet hope you've got the tool! don't forget to check the tension a few times afer rotating the wheel to different positions.... everything's not necessarily perfect and you may have a tight spot.
