Dumped a bike for the first time today

Well, they say it isn't if you dump, but when... Was doing something i have done at least 20 times. Jumped on the GL1000 and istead fo backing it up to turn around in the driveway, went out on the back lawn and made a U turn, but wet grass(fress metled frost) it is just above freezing here and too much lean and blam, down I go. Talk about stupid, should have known the grass was wet and to take it with less lean. Oh well, no damage to me or the bike but felt like an ass, and no one saw me :) So I guess if you are going to dump, that is the way to do it, Have a piece of sod I will have to patch when I get home though.

Cheers,

Maritime.

Came close to that once, if it wasn't my 450 I would have. Bumped it while bending down to check the oil and it started going over, just strong enough to grab it and stop it, the wing would have crushed me ;D Love the big bike for the long rides but forget how heavy the damn thing is when driving slow.

hehee, I dumped a bike at the gas pump once, talk about embarassing

I've done that before too...it's so embarrasing. Even worse, when I was a younger lad and stll lived with mom and dad, I was coming up the driveway and dad was sitting on the front porch. My throttle got stuck open and the bike took off with me on it without me being able to stop it. It was bee lining for the house. About mid lawn I made an executive decision and purposefully laid the bike down. Burned my leg on the exhaust, but nothing more. Once dad found out I was alright, he laughed at me. It's just a part of growing as a rider! Welcome to the pound the ground club!

What I learned from moto-x: if no one saw it and no was damage done, it never happened.

Been there.

In college I used to park my old 400T by my front door (had to ride across the yard). My house was on the corner of a 4-way stop. One day I came into the driveway and was going a little too fast when I hit the brakes. Was still slowing down when I hit the grass. Wouldn't you know it, the grass was wet. Since wet grass doesn't provide much friction I started sliding across the yard. About 10 ft before hitting the intersecting street I made the decision to dump it. I hopped clear but the bike went down and bent the shifter and a mirror. It laid there running for a few seconds and I just left it there and went inside. I was too embarrassed to be seen by the ppl in the cars stopped at the intersection. :-[

Man, glad you didn't get hurt, I have not done it "yet" yet being the key word. Everyone I know says the same, it isn't a matter of have or have not but when.

I did almost drop my scrambler leaving the house on cold spring day, only been riding a few days and didn't know much about bikes or carbs, treated it like my car, hopped on started it up and tried to leave. Turning right about 100 feet later the bike tried to die off and I had to do the beinger skipp to keep it up all while trying to get it to fire back up before getting ran over by traffic. Very red in the face after that.

But again , when I go, i hope it is also in the grass and no one see.....

i dumped my HD in front of 260 people 3 weeks ago! sucked balls... got too hungry on the front brake on wet black top... BOOM!

If you hadn't told everyone here it would never have happened :) But now everyone knows. Glad you weren't hurt.

i dumped my bike at a red light. i let the clutch out and forgot i was in 1st so i stalled. i only have a kick start so i put frantically put the kick stand down to kick it and never put it in neutral and my foot slipped off the kick and i just fell over and i rolled into the street. feeling like a dumb ass i stood up, turned around and just shrugged at the line of cars behind me. then i picked her up and started her up and took off. i felt hella retarded and couldn't stop laughing at myself for about 3 hours. this was right after i replaced the old bar end mirrors that were all scratched up too

I swerved into a large very visible (well, not that visible obvioulsy) concrete barrier at about 30MPH. It seperated the traffic lanes from a dedicated streetcar lane.

I went flying, bike made it over the barrier and I watched it slide about 60 feet or more on the valve cover (BMW airhead). I bashed my helmet, tore my jacket, scuffed my wallet (in my jacket pocket) and watch and gloves, and I still have a partially numb left hip. But no real damage. Bike needed a few new parts (signals and clutch perch) but it's all good now.

Boy did I feel stupid. Parked the bike, got on JT's Vespa riding bitch and we continued on for ice cream. Went back for the bike later that night, put it on a trailer and that was that.

That was my 2nd time. First was years ago when the front wheel washed out in my back lane on some gravel as I turned into my garage. 1973 CB500K. Was hardly moving.

i feel that one! i have wrecked 2 bikes... hit a cow patty knee dragging a turn got side ways and flipped 4x's i was thrown into a corn field... it saved my life! the corn almost caught me... my bike... not so lucky CB750 #1 destroyed . 2nd smashed into the back of a parked semi on my rocket (smoking joe eddition CBR600) god himself was with me on this one... i hit a moving truck while i was coming off a exit ramp at mach 5... he had his back door open so i was launced into the back of the tuck.. slid all the way to the back and smacked the end of the inside of the trailer... dislocated my left shoulder... but i was alive... that right there... SLOWED ME DOWN! no more rockets... not more idiot riding! was a HUGE eye opener... the bike disinigrated! it even cracked the rear wheel right though!

Glad you're OK! I hope my first wipe out on my bike is on grass-I dumped my scooter once riding through an apple orchard-I'm sure it beats pavement!

I had a similar trailer incident, except the bike went in the trailer and i went under. Don't ever wheelie in the pits.

I figured I'd share my stupid moment with others who understand. My wife would just freak and want me not to ride anymore. Man I went out today -5 Celcius and fired up the GL1000, well I turned it over 15 times till it could putter to life, then let it warm up for 5 mins while I put many layers on and got ready to go to work, wipped the frost off the seat, drove out on the lawn and made the turn in the crunchy grass just to prove I wouldn't dump it again. No problem, but I think it is almost time to put the bikes away for the winter  Have to go to my in-laws to get the 450 cause I was too drunk to drive it the hour home from their place on thanksgiving(Canadian)... the wine and scotch was just too good that night.

Cheers to everyone in the I dumped my bike club.

My dad (who has been riding since the 60's) had his first major get off this week. He hit some sugar sand during a corner, rear kicked out, slid into a jersey wall. The impact with the wall broke every bone in his right foot as well as his right ankle. When the bike fell back to the left, all of the weight came down on his left ankle...which also broke. He was only going about 15-20mph.

90+ days in a rehab facility. He will probably spend some time in a wheelchair.

Be careful out there.

I dumped one coming out of a gravel driveway....right in front of a cop ::) twice!
Busted shift lever, clutch lever and mirror.

i dumped my kz200 when my SO and i were on vacation last year. we were parking at the beach, and i grabbed a little front brake. my right leg was cut up pretty bad, the parking area was very rocky. there happened to be a beach patrol guy right there, who helped me clean up. i wish jeremy had gotten a picture, blood running down my leg into my shoes.. i didn't communicate that it was ok to take a picture, and though he really wanted to take one, he thought it'd be rude and i might get mad. silly guy, he knows i'm never mad :p

we were riding to a bbq at the end of the season last year, and the bike shut off moments away from our destination. i was determined to get it running rather than pushing it, so i hopped off. i didn't realize that i'd stopped at the edge of the road, and there was a bit of a drop off after that. i stepped onto the lower area, throwing my bike into my leg and i got a bad exhaust burn. that made me jump and burn it again in the exact same spot. at least i didn't dump the bike, i'm certain i looked ridiculous jumping around though.

Ahhh... the first time I threw my beloved '93 GSXR 750 down the road was hitting sand like that in a 90 degree left hander. My first instinct was to pick up my bike and assess its damage, not my own! The second get off was in a dry, plowed field. Also a 90 degree 15 mph left hander. I somehow jumped a ditch and ended up about 30 yards or so into this field. The dirt was almost powdery. My buddies said all they saw was a huge cloud of dust and thought I had bit it hard. I was ok, I thought. But, several years later, my back pain gradually got worse since that off road excursion. Last year I finally had surgery on my lower back. Good as new!

Now, if we're talking about dropping a bike, I've done it twice. The first time was when I didn't put my kick stand down all the way. I was parking my GSXR 750 next to my car. Got off and it fell, pinning me against the car! I hardly had any leverage to pick the bike up as it was laying on my knees. It was at night and luckily no one saw that spectacle. The second time was with my then two week old not-even-broken-in '02 GSXR 1000. I had it parked in my garage and I was backing my sportscar into the garage. I heard something and thought "holy shit!" I got out of the car and saw my beautiful new sport bike laying on its side. I had knocked it over and pushed it along the floor about a foot or so. I was totally sick after that! :-D
