I really want to keep the front end on this bike really clean so I ordered this headlight which has a bottom mount.
The original plan was to either polish or blast the fork lowers however I decided to go with a silver finish instead so I painted them, I had also planned on not running a front fender but I mounted this chrome fender which I thought would help keep the nice classic look I want for this bike.
I built a headlight bracket that bolts to the lower triple tree and mounted the new headlight on the CB450, I also lengthened the throttle cable by shortening the casing so I could mount a Honda XR throttle control which is smaller and a lot cleaner looking than the stock control and fitted a nice pair of gold and black grips!
I was able to spend some time working on the CB450 over the last few days, as I am not going to run the factory emblems I filed, filled, and smoothed the sides of the gas tank and I also filled and smoothed the two top holes on each side cover.
We also decided to paint the bodywork forest green pearl so after I primed and wet sanded the tank and side covers I sprayed the green basecoat. I am waiting to clearcoat the tank and side covers as I am having new gold and red DWMS Racing decals made and want to clearcoat over them. I am going to try and finish building the all steel tail section next week and will paint it green as well.
This photo does not show the color very well however this is how she looks now.
I had the gold and red tank decals cut today and applied them to the tank to see what they would look like. I had the decals made a little larger than I originally planned however now I think they may be too large, what do you all think?
I was also considering having my other logo with the crown, checkered flags, number seven, etc. cut for the side of the tank in gold and red as it may have looked a little classier however now I think I may have it cut to the proper size for the top of the tail section so it will be in the same place that I woodburned it into the reverse ports tail section.
Very nice I like the understated look. This can be an excellent example of a "doable" bike for others perhaps to follow? It's cool to see the wild and sometimes far out customs but the average guy can only wonder? This will be a cool bike for sure.
Cheers, 50gary

Brother I can not agree more, I find myself building full customs and show restorations here at the shop daily and when I first purchased this bike I really thought about building her one of those ways and struggled with whether or not I wanted to build a really nice custom or restore her however after some thought I decided it would be fun to get back to basics and just build a nice simple inexpensive bike that would be fun to ride. Almost everything on her is stock, the only parts I can think of at the moment that are not stock are the headlight, handlebars, throttle control, grips, tail section, and cosmetics like paint and polish. I do plan on changing a few more small things like the footpegs for example and I may change the exhaust however I will stay with the duals and they will still be something simple and classic.
I guess sometimes less is more, I thought it would be fun to go back to a simple enjoyable build without a lot of custom parts kind of like when we were kids building and riding bikes and to be totally honest with you she has already become one of my favorite motorcycles!
I decided to give the vinyl DWMS Racing decals I had cut for the CB450 tank emblems a hammered look, it took me a few extra hours of work however I love the way they came out!
I still have some polishing I want to do however this is how the hammered DWMS Racing emblems look with clear, it was really hard to get a good photo of the emblems as the clear is so bright so this one was taken in the shade with no flash.
The emblems started out as regular smooth vinyl, I dimpled them with the corners of a couple different sized screwdrivers and I also used two different nails! I wanted it to look really random so that is why I used different things to achive different size dimples, I actually found that a small screwdriver with a broken tip left the best marks.
To get the smooth finish I sprayed a couple coats of clearcoat over the decals and wet sanded the clear after it dried with 2500 sand paper, after I wet sanded I hand polished the clear with 3M compound.
Re: DWMS Racing CB450 Back To Basics Hammered Vinyl Decals!
I had originally planned on running mufflers on this bike however I decided I wanted her a little louder so I built a set of drag pipes for her! I really think the small drag pipes fit the classic look I am trying to keep, what do you all think?
