Electric starter problems!

Hey guys I have a 1978 Yamaha xs750 Special. To start off from what I hear these bikes can be a nightmare when it comes to electrical related issues. With that being said i have recently ran in to the problem of my bike turning over only sometimes when I hit the electric start button. It seems to be hit or miss if it will turn over. I did the screwdriver test on my solenoid and it sparked a few times and the engine began to turn over. From what I know this means the solenoid is bad not the starter motor itself. Luckily I had a backup solenoid sitting around. I thought easy fix, just put on the new solenoid. Result...same things as the original solenoid. Only starts with the screwdriver test. I then tested both solenoids with a voltmeter and they checked out. Also I might add, when i tried the screwdriver method, as the starter cranked, the cylinders backfired, backfired with enough force to nearly knock the carbs completely out of the cylinders. I am currently at a loss as to what the problem may be. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

This may sound stupid so excuse me. The only reason i can think of the cylinders backfiring hard enough to fall out of the cylinder boots is due to the fact that I may have connected the ignition coils wrong? Not sure if this could have that effect.
