Electrical help-Cafe racer

claygs750

Been Around the Block
So I'm just starting a restoration of a 1980 GS 750 to a cafe racer. I have everything off the frame except the electrical and ready to start cleaning, painting and rewiring. So, I want to open up the triangle, but I have very little knowledge of wiring. I would like to move everything to the rear under the hump without needing to rewire the entire system. I've seen several threads of people doing this, but is there a thread from start to finish that would be the most helpful? Thanks

I'd start here and find the wiring diagram for your bike:

relocating the electrics usually just involves lengthening wires where needed and making sure to keep the circuits isolated.

That's what I like to see, logical thinking to a complicated problem - this answer never occurred to me; so it's a good one to file away for future reference :)

I would also suggest checking out BassCliff's website. He has a heap of great How To's hosted there.
I am planning on doing the same thing with my 77 GS750 but I will be building a whole new harness, aside from the fact my old one is melted, the GS is known for bad electrics.

Go have a look on The GSresources as well. Heaps of info there.

Sometimes the obvious needs to be stated. I'm glad you found it helpful. ;D ;)

Ok so it looks like the items that will need to be relocated are the following:
--Battery
--Rectifier
--Fuse box
--Relay-starter?
--Igniter

Since I'm very new to all this do I basically find the same type wire, follow it back to where it starts and then basically extend it back to the new location? Can I just spice into the wires where they end now and add to it? Any type of electrical connectors preferred over others?
I've attached the wiring diagram, but its pretty hard for me to understand. Thanks for the help.
