I recently picked up a Yamaha RD200 that's previously been modified.
I rode it all day no problems, but when I went to ride it tonight it died at a stop sign and I couldn't get it to start again. The battery eventually completely died.
I hooked it up to cables and it started first kick with the lights nice and bright, but when I took it off the cables it wouldn't lose the lights but they would be a ton dimmer and the bike wouldn't start. Not to mention when I was riding it right before this, when I flipped the headlight on the bike would run worse. What's my problem? I haven't checked plugs or anything yet but it clearly is electrical. Here's a picture of the bike.
That sounds like a charging system that isn't - charging that is. Charge the battery in the shop and fir the bike up and use a voltmeter to check what happens to battery voltage when you rev it up.
You are looking to see:
Voltage before it's turned ON
Voltage after it's turned ON
Voltage when it's idling (no lights)
Voltage at 3,000 plus (no lights
And then the same running voltages with lights on.
I'd agree that it sounds like you were running on the battery and as it's run down the bike running becomes poor, I've had the same on my CD175. I had to replace the stator.
Deep cycling a battery like this can warp the plates quite quickly and then it's knackered.
Could be charging problems that killed the battery. Fit a new battery and see what the voltages are. If voltage goes too high or doesn't charge, you will know what to look at next. Does that bike have a voltage regulator? If so it might be good to check what Sparcks have available for it.

Definitely not, RD200s have an integrated generator/electric start, the only other bikes I know with this are the Suzuki GT185 and GT200X5.
From memory RD200s used to have a lot of problems with the ignition advance mechanism, but the whole ignition on an RD200 is a little bit weird.
