Enduro GR- break her down for parts.......

Re: Enduro GR- nice weather = video clip

Ok, probably the last update on this one for a while. I just don't want to spend any more money on this one until it gets closer to being legal. I'll be cleaning up some stuff, but nothing drastic.

Ordered some gaskets for the motor even though this has some fairly new gaskets all around but I wanted to be able to bolt it back together. Got some paint and a different front sprocket cover. Went from this:

Nice Rich, love the paint and sprocket cover... nice touches!

Re: Enduro GR- nice weather = video clip

Way better.I've put my projects to bed until after the first of the year.

Re: Enduro GR- nice weather = video clip

Feel sorry for you guys having to shut stuff down for winter... I'm just gettin' wound up for summer :D

Re: Enduro GR- nice weather = video clip

Ok, last one for a while, I promise. Got the other side painted to match the left:

And for those who may be wondering, that is a nice oil puddle from this bike. The oil pan had been jacked up by the PO (it's always that damn PO......) and I've never been able to actually "fix" it. Luckily, a guy on another forum happens to have a complete bottom end laying around. So I'll be getting it replaced soon!

I really like that paint Rich, that's a real nice finish it gives to the case covers.

Glad your getting that oil pan sorted too, coz that'd really suck to keep leaving slimy trails behind...

Re: Enduro GR- nice weather = video clip

Just realized, I don't think I did mention it. It's Duplicolor Metalcast paint. The primer can be bought at Autozone, but the "smoked chrome" can't. I got it from Summit Racing. It can actually leave a much smoother finish with proper painting techniques (read: there's orange peel on mine).

Re: Enduro GR- nice weather = video clip

Rich, I hope all is well down there with the newborn, and was wondering if you have been out in the shop? Also, do you have some numbers for that swing arm mod? I'm still in the looking and pondering stage of what to do with my GR 650, because I'm in the middle of a home renovation, which of course means there is little in the pocket for motorbike resurrection. What i have come up with is a take off of an old military type, with a utilitarian rack over an extended rear sway arm, tractor style seat, and a reduced raked set of bars, and maybe some highway pegs, I mean, don't your knees ache after a few hours?

Re: Enduro GR- nice weather = video clip

Welcome to the site Rooky! As much as I dislike that term, another guy has it in his username (Old Rookie) and I call him Rook. Anyways, back to business.....

The newborn isn't due until April (if my wife can make it that long), but I've been in the shop. A lot of small tedious things, and nothing really with this bike. What numbers were you looking for?

Re: Enduro GR- nice weather = video clip

Well, I'm curious as to how the extended sway arms have changed the height of the bike and how it has affected the ground clearance. What is the handling like now, and has the suspension softened much as a result of the extension of the arms. Do you think a longer shock could be squeezed in there to give it more clearance like a Dual Sport? Also, what does a mod like that cost? I understand that you live in a steel town where there is probably no shortage of welders. Just curious.

Re: Enduro GR- nice weather = video clip

Hey Rich,I picked up a bit of info that may interest you that I saw on the Kat Riders forum.A member there is a suspension master. He said for every inch that a swing arm is lengthened, the spring rate needs to be increased 25 inch pounds over stock, to keep the stock feel.So a four inch stretched swing arm would need a spring rate of 100 inch pounds stiffer than stock.I hope this makes sense and helps.

Re: Enduro GR- nice weather = video clip

Thanks Ben! I did not know that. It's a big help and does make sense though.

Rooky - the ground clearance hasn't changed any noticeable amount. With the stock bike on the kickstand, the swingarm is angled down only a few degrees. But as Ben pointed out, the suspension gets softer due to the new leverage of a longer swinger. So any gain in ride height from the angle is lost once the suspension is loaded with the weight of the bike. I had a friend of mine do all the welding (oddly enough, not locally) so I can't even guess the cost.

It would take a LOT of research/work to find another shock that will fit. Looking around on the GSResources, I saw that certain Ducati shocks will fit on OTHER Suzuki cycles, but nobody has confirmed that one will fit a GR.

What are you looking for in a shock?Stiffer?Longer?Longer and stiffer?Do you know the shock length bolt hole to bolt hole? The measurement needs to be accurate as possible. With that extended swing arm a one inch longer shock may lift the back 3 inches.I'm not good at angles and lengths.

Re: Enduro GR- nice weather = video clip

This is purely a random thought that my little mind just puked out.Look at your pic below.See where the bottom shock mounts in the triangular link/bracket?What if you drilled a new hole higher and remounted the shock? It could raise the rear and change the angles enough to make the ratio better making the shock feel stiffer.Did any of that make sense?

Re: Enduro GR- nice weather = video clip

If you make the portion of your linkage longer between the pivot and the shock you'll gain some leverage for the shock, but likely you'll run into clearance issues....maybe worth looking into though.
