Engine Cleanup

I have removed the engine from my CB750c. It is generally very good shape but there is a significant amount of greasy buildup on the outside of the engine cases and tranny. There is also some tar here and there.

I want to clean it up really well. The closer I can get it to being absolutely spotless the better. My question is what is the best way to get the engine really clean without damaging the current the engine paint?

Your help and suggestions will be much appreciated! Thanks.

Simple Green with a plastic scrub brush and a tub of hot water usually gets me most of the way there.

You can try a pressure washer, too. That's not so good for grease, but works well on caked-on dirt.

Get one of those car wash brushes. They tend to have nice long bristles - good for getting in the fins etc.
