Been Around the Block
How often should a muffler be repacked? I have Emgo Shortys on and I know that I have seen many places that they come packed very poorly when you first get them. I have been running them since February this year and like the sound a lot better than the stock one s but have noticed that they are getting louder. Basically I am asking what everyone else's experience has been with them and if you have any tips. I am also considering putting a 3 inch extension in so the pipe doesn't end right at the cuff of my pants any more (it was great all winter but now its as hot as it is going to get in Phoenix this summer and I feel like I am cooking my legs everywhere I go... I wonder if people behind me constantly smell BBQ...) any way for reference here is a link to my build as I know the importance of pictures:

Can you actually replace the packing in the EMGO shorties? I've seen people who have repacked a reverse megaphone from EMGO but not the generic shorties.

I think there should be one bolt holding the core in, obviously on the 1 3/4" side.

On dirt bikes we replaced the packing from factory with better packing almosT right away and when it was getting to loud we replaced !

There is it is for sure doable I was mostly wondering if now was the time and from everything I can tell (specifically Richard haha) it is for sure time to repack. I will just add it to the to do list thanks guys.

Do a layer of coarse steel wool, then a layer of fiberglass muffler packing. The re-pack will last longer that way.

Or you can use ALL steel wool, and blow sparks out your exhaust whenever you get on it! Party time!

I just repacked my shorty reverse cones, the packing that have in there blows out on the first ride and its damn loud in a horrible way. You wont have a lot of space for steel wool and packing, but dont use the packing that looks like fluffy insulation, there is a packing that is more dense and mat like. You dont need any special tools, use a flat head and tap on the peforated pipe that is on the 1-3/4" side, it will pop out easily. I also added a 1-1/2" sink strainer to the exhaust end as an added baffle

strainer tacked onto end

works very well and cut the DBs down a lot

it worked beautifully but not my idea, saw a thread on another forum where someone did this, I thought what the hell its only $4 if it doesnt work.......with the repack and strainer, no more evil eye from anyone when i pass them, their car, their house, and especially cops since there has been a lot of talk of cracking down on excessively noisy bikes in Ontario
To be honest, it sounded like shit before, no sounds nice

ADC... I generally (and begrudgingly ;) ) agree with you 99% of the time, but steel wool is not a good idea for packing. Just sayin'.

I was thinking...but steel wool is flammable. Ok Stainless steel wool is not.

OK I want to repack mine. What exactly are you guys putting in there. and where to find what works best?

I found it...HOLY CRAP that stuff expensive!!!

I just did mine this evening with FMF 4-stroke muffler packing. It came as a mat and was pretty easy to wrap onto the core with safety wire wrapped around it. It was a pain to cram back in the shorties, though the sound definitely improved.

BWAHAHAHA. OK this isnt funny. My emgo shorties have been loud since UPS man dropped em off.
After reading this thread I thought, what the hell? Here is what I found.
