Extended cooling fins!

Dingo

peace and grease
So i was surfing at the brat style website, and i the fins on the sr400's look huge, i mean the cylinder looks really big, so i looked some more and found that those guys extend the cooling fins on their singles, heres some picks so you can guys take a look and tell me what you think about them.

Interesting idea.
Great for the engine.
Bad for the extra weight.

Modifying the jugs would probably decrease the value of the bike in resale unless
1) it was done by a well known pro
2) it was some kind of show award winner
3) it was on TV

If a had a bike, i would do it to my bike hahahaha, heck now im thinking of buying a single bike.

I think the finished product looks great. Extra weight would be about the equivalent of eating a hamburger for lunch, so pretty minimal ;)

A lot of work to be sure, unless of course you're a skilled aluminum welder and have access to a waterjet.

Yep, I think it's badass. Makes the motor look extra beefy for sure.

Chica does it with just weld. Builds the fins out then shapes em.

now that i would like to see, chica is one hell of a fabricator, and pretty wicked welder.

I wouldn't worry about weight...it's just aluminum

that's fair.
there are two points to consider:
1) One of the ideas of cafe racers is to remove extra weight to increase speed. then again, that isn't a cafe racer.
2) any change in weight moves the center of gravity and center of pressure. it could be a factor at higher speeds.

an off balance in weight sideways can change the dynamics of the bike and theoretically could contribute to a speed wobble. A bad sped wobble becomes a tank slapper which can be fatal. I believe the guy below died from this speed wobble.

again ... it's just stuff to consider.

I def agree that all safety factors need to be considered...

But at the same time adding fins to your motor wouldn't cause your bike to do anything wierd even if it was all on one side... Consider 4-into-1 exhausts that have 1 pipe, on 1 side. I'd imagine that everyone with a stock sport bike (or any bike with 1-sided exhaust) would agree that even at 100 MPH plus it doesn't make enough of a difference (although that guy from the infamous speed-wobble video def had some problems with his bike, it's more of an add for a steering damper).

The only issue I can see is that it would have to be done really well... Not for heat transfer, just for looks... it would be way too easy to mess this mod up. ;)

I can see why someone would want to do it too, I mean the singles don't look very big in a nice beefy bike like the one pictured. If I had a single and knew someone who was excellent at welding aluminum I'd be out looking for that kit!

That rider actualy lived! and the balance issue, you gotta be kidding me what are you doing building GP bikes? hundered bucks says that you dont have your bike on a pair of scales when you work on it. The potential extra cooling more than out does the few grams this would put on.

Actually I'm not kidding.

Changing center of gravity and center of pressure can seriously screw up your ride.

It's ok if you don't believe me. Just wear a helmet.

Not gonna argue... But do you also advocate not taking parts off? Rearsets? Different handlebars? Filling up your gas tank? All of these things would cause more of a shift in centre of balance than 1/2 a pound of aluminum on your motor.

Yes and no. Weight changes at the bottom of the bike can have a huge effect on center gravity/pressure.

think of it this way ... adding a brick to the top of a house doesn't do much because the weight is evenly distributed to the whole foundation.

Changing a brick on the foundation changes the foundation balance and thus everything above and around that brick.

except that the motor (with few exceptions) isnt a weight bearing component of the bike(like the foundation of a building). combine that with the fact that you would be adding the weight evenly around the whole cylinder and the fact that that aluminum is what? 3lbs? its not going to fuck with much.

I'm gonna extend the fins on my airhead so they run along the ground. This way I don't need the centre or side stands.
