Feel like a total bad ass.

I've owned my first bike ('72 CB350) for about a month now. It was in desperate need of new tires. I ordered some new tires, tubes and rim strips last week and installed them today. I've never worked on a motorcycle before so I'm pretty proud of this accomplishment. Just wanted to share my excitement.

Officially a bad ass motorcycle mechanic. Haha

RAD you should be proud i cant change a tire with out buying a few tubes

Changing a tire is something everyone should know how to do. There used the be a special test in the ISDT where a competitor pulled into a marked box. As soon as he pulled into the box the stopwatch started. He had to remove the wheels and remove the tires and tubes and refit them. Inflate them (usually with a co2 cartridge) and ride out of the box. His time taken was part of his ISDT score. I saw an old film of one English rider, Johnny Brittain doing it in 4 min. 59 sec.!! I used to try and see i I could be as fast when I'd fit a new tire but never got anywhere near his time.

Re: Feel like a total bad ass.

Any task you take on and accomplish that you have never done before, is one to be proud of!

Hoofhearted - 4m59s is astounding!
I could never compete with a time like that so it makes sense to get someone else to do it so I can avoid embarrassing myself!

Crazy

4.59 is scary fast. The ISDT guys practised tire changing because it was part of the ISDT, Could I do that? Not a hope in hell. But I've always changed my own tires. Its not that difficult. Why have someone do what you can do? Mike. I meant to say congrats.

I agree- it is cool to feel good about anything you have accomplished for the first time . . .

Bill- I used to race harescrambles and I got down to around 7-8 minutes on a tire change, but 50% of the time I punctured the damn tube- useless change, lol. A lot of guys started running Moose tubes, a solid expanded rubber 'tube'- they were a bitch to change, but didn't go flat. Not sure if they still use them as I have been out of it for over a decade. Probably not legal in some events like ISDE.

The ISDE is quite an event- a former racing buddy of mine qualified a couple times and said it was the most difficult thing he'd ever done.

Nice! Tires can be a bitch, so tackling them IS an accomplishment.

I've found the key to changing tires without pinching tube is A LOT of lube. White Lithium is my favorite.

Yeah the lube would definitely help. I watched a guy on YouTube change a tire and he brushed the bead with soapy water. That's what I did. It was noticeably easier to get on after doing so.

I took it for a ride after and every time I hit a good bump water would be forced out from under the bead and splash me in the face. So it's refreshing as well. Haha

Which reminds me...
Back when I had a Norton Atlas, the Brit manual suggested using "washing up liquid" as a lubricant when changing "tyres". Can one of the Brit guys her please tell me;

Just what the hell is "washing up liquid?"

It the stuff the brits use to wash guilt off there hands....

Just kidding
