Been Around the Block
Guy's I got my cl360 together and she is idling well but is cutting out at mid to upper rpm's. When I got back from my ride today i noticed that fuel is running out of the right carbs overflow tube. I mean a straight steady flow. I am running pod filters. What is everyones thoughts?

Check that the overflow tube isn't cracked.

Happens a lot and will have you scratching your head for weeks if you don't think to look for it.

I think Louie is spot on with the stuck float / valve for the fuel flowing out the overflow tube. Pull the float bowl and see it the float is binding or if the valve seat is not sealing properly (dirt, worn, binding)
But for the cutting out at higher RPM's did you re-jet after the pods were installed? Most likely running lean if you didn't.

Cutting out can be too rich, too, which can happen if the carb has too much fuel in it from a stuck float.

Louie, your thinking here is all wrong.

If the float is stuck down, fuel flows into the bowl unabated, and the bowl overflows. That's why fuel is coming out of the overflow tube.

The bowl will have TOO MUCH fuel in it.

Still wrong.
The main jets don't care about the volume of fuel in the fuel bowl, they care about the fuel level.
If fuel is coming out of the overflow, the fuel level is too high.

It's a gravity thing.

Now, as far as the effects of too rich... Don't ever read too much into a person's description of a symptom on the Internet. When someone says, "cutting out," it may not mean the same thing that that you would use those words to describe. When someone says that in the context of fuel running out their overflow, I hear them telling me it is breaking up, like they do when too rich.

Ok.... WONT help.

It's alll yours RIGHT guy... You must be the most brilliant interpreter of vagueness on the board. And I'll bet one thing. When he's at wide open throttle. And it's "cutting out" I'll bet theres no fuel coming of the overflow. Bikes dont cut out from too much fuel. Period.

Alright, enough of all that:

Helpful time --
1. Fuel running out of the right carb - Your fuel float, or your float needle is sticking/stuck. You will have to remove the float bowl and see what the cause is. If it's been sitting, and the carbs have not been cleaned, then you probably have a "tar" build up on the pivot pin, or inside the brass float needle receiver. Additionally, if the float needles are rubber tipped (some are, some are solid) the rubber may have degraded, which means it will need replaced.

You can *sometimes* tap (lightly) on the float bowl and free-up the floats, but the problem will pop up again probably the next time you ride.

Address the overflow problem first.

2. I am running pod filters - Did you upjet *AND* did you change the throttle slide springs? CV Carbs require a certain amount of vacuum pressure to function properly. When you removed the airbox, you changed (eliminated) some of that vacuum pressure, which will cause the carbs to "run like shit" on anything over 1/3 throttle. You will need to install stiffer throttle slide springs in order to run pod filters, or run socks on the pods themselves (which still doesn't really fix the problem)

Best bet is to purchase a "Jet Kit" (Dynojet?) which will include the throttle slide springs, then use the one most appropriate for your situation. My understanding is that it should use the same kit as the Honda CB350T, but do some research first. *AND FIX THE OVERFLOW PROBLEM FIRST* :)

If it's running stock jets with pods, it WILL be lean top end and miss fire/cut out
The flooding /overflow could be cracked standpipe in float bowl stuck float or dirt in shut off valve.
The only way to find out is to get carbs apart and re-do them properly
Did I do those carbs for you??

...

Well that sure sounds similar to my diagnosis.
Best lesson learned here is
1) We ALL wanna help! Maybe need more info.
2) correct terminology is a must
3) running bad can be caused by a shitload of things... Christ, it could be ignition for all we know sittin at our keyboards ;D

guys i tore the carbs apart and found that the float level was off (so i adjusted to stock specs) and the right floats seemed a bit sticky. I pulled the pin and found a white residue (most likely from the lemon juice hot tub). So i sanded it butter smooth. I took her out last night and was all grins. She still needs a bit of tuning but is pulling hard and is very fun to ride. Guy's I truly thank you for all the help! Also just to clarify. The right side carb was pouring fuel out on the ground rapidly. The bike was sputtering and for a loss of power at mid to upper throttle. i thank all of you guy's once again and PJ no you didn't tune these. ;)
