Started building mopeds a couple of years ago. Learned a ton about two strokes and built this:

Here it is with a more cafe'd seat -

Got that thing to do 60. Pretty sketchy on a one-speed. I sold that moped in December for too much money and started thinking about motorcycles. Bought a cl350 and fell in love with riding. I love building things almost as much as riding, so when I bought this 1972 CB450 from an old neighbor for $1000 I decided to get to work. Started this about 3 weeks ago.

Thing is cherry, 6k miles. It had been sitting for five years, so i cleaned the carbs and threw a new battery in there and it fired right up. I was satisfied with that, so i decided to rip it apart.

I had my buddy rebuild it with new gaskets, rings, and seals. Also ordered Dyna coils and a Pamco ignition as well as some Mikuni 32's from Sudco. Also decided to go with CL450 scrambler pipes into Emgo shorty mufflers - They will be powdered black, along with all of the little bits and pieces. Here is the motor, painted black.

While my buddy was building the motor, I got to work on the frame. I de-tabbed, stripped it, and chopped off the rear end. I'll be keeping the frame raw, slightly polished and then clear coated. I'm going for a bratty look.

I was planning on running an upswept rear hoop but i started visualizing it and decided that i want a totally flat seat. Here it is mocked up.

Made a seat pan out of some 17 gauge sheet metal, came out perfect. The front of it will need to be trimmed back a little bit when i determine how it will interface with the tank.

Decided to ditch the front disc brake in favor of one of those early model 10" drums. This wasn't too easy to find.

Both of the hubs will be brass plated and the rims will be powdered black, still trying to decide if i want to pony up the extra dough for some SunRims. I've got some stainless spokes and brass nipples in the mail. Here is a photo of the Hagon shocks that I'll be running, the mufflers and drag bars.

Other goodies include an Acewell digital gauge, all new controls etc. The tank is getting brass plated like the hubs and the seat will be black denim. Still not sure about what to do about a battery or where I'm going to put it. I want something smaller but I also want to be able to run an electric start. Any suggestions on that? I want this bike to have the look of a brat but to perform well, that's why i went with Hagons that will only drop it .5" etc. I love the look of the firestones, so i may run them but i'm still thinking about putting some quality rubber on it. Any suggestions on how to keep that vintage look? Not into k70's.

I know the post is a little picture heavy, but i heard you guys are into that ;)

Re: First build, Heritage 1972 CB450

This is a cool build. On the brass or copper plate if you want the shiny look you'll have to clear coat it after plating it.

Re: First build, Heritage 1972 CB450

Yeah, i want it to patina just a bit. I figure i'll let it tarnish just a little bit and then freeze it with a clear coat.

Re: First build, Heritage 1972 CB450

Ya Saturday I got several compliments on the wood grain on my bike... I think I'm going to polish out the copper patina just a little bit.

Re: First build, Heritage 1972 CB450

gonna be sweet! love the 450s...

question for you, where did you find the fork brace you used on the Puch? beautiful scooter btw...

Re: First build, Heritage 1972 CB450

Thanks, that fork brace is just the fender mount. Drilled it out, and painted that shit gold!

Re: First build, Heritage 1972 CB450

Thanks for the comments. Yeah, there was a pretty lengthy thread on that bike after i built it, and another when i sold it. A lot of people had opinions on the $2500 price tag, but I got my full asking price ;)

On to the build, my buddy threw together this Photoshop mock-up. The motor, pipes, bars, and headlights are supposed to be blacked out and the hubs gold, but it still gives a general idea:

After looking at it, i wasn't really happy with that big brass tank. I'm rethinking the color palette now. Although I think it's becoming a bit common, i was curious to see what it would look like with a raw tank/frame so I brushed it with a bit of Satan's Snot (aircraft stripper).

Threw it on the frame and it looked pretty cool

I think that if I polish the frame and tank and clear coat them, it would look pretty cool with the rest of the black/polished components, maybe with a few little brass bits here and there. I'm also thinking about doing a metallic burgundy tank on the raw frame. Maybe a gloss black frame with matte black tank and pipes, and brass highlights - kind of along the color scheme of that moped I built. I keep going back and forth on it, so I'm not sure just yet.

In other news, I picked this up over the weekend for $300. It needs a lot of lovin, but a friend of mine has a lot of parts for it, so it should make a good project down the line.

One last thing - I was planning on drilling vents in the hubs, but I'm somewhat concerned about compromising the structural integrity of them. I know that tons of people do it, but does anyone have any advice, or has anyone had any problems with this?

It's a 1965 CB77, with CL pipes.

Reminds me of the bike below. My Brother and I ran into a guy last summer who had just bought one and got stranded. It was mint and one of the coolest Scramblers I've ever seen. We ended up giving him a tow back to his house with my trailer. I love the Hondas of that era

Re: First build, Heritage 1972 CB450

Yeah, those early models really turn me on! That is the same bike, although where the one that you posted has beautiful paint and most likely functions properly, mine is covered in rust and doesnt turn over. heheheheh

well you gotta start somewhere eh? :D

I just realized that that flat rear hoop is totally not going to give me enough clearance. Looks like i'll have to chop it off and order an upswept one... Although, I wonder if i hit both sides with a torch at the same time if i can just kinda bend it up in place? Anybody have any thoughts on that? thx
