First Cafe Build - 1980 KZ440

Nothing too exciting on this update, but none the less here we go. I got the All Balls head bearings in on Saturday

I used some washers temp to determine the size for the spacers that I'll need to make. These will work for now.

I machined the dropout slots in the swingarm so that the KZ1000 Axle would fit. Now I need to determine if it would be easier to turn it down and thread it OR just turn out a new one on the lathe. Then need to do some things to get a little more clearance for the disc and sprocket.

loving it - i'm a huge fan of replacing old tech and modernising, so i'm feeling the new forks and double disc front end.
where are you going to mount the rear shock to?

I am going to make some mounts under the seat and the swingarm. Plus well brace the swingarm to take the stress from the mono-shock

how much did the axle cost you and how long to make as i am looking to get one made for my mito
A friend of the family made it for me so it didnt cost me anything. Time-wise I gave it to him Thursday, had it back Tuesday...I wasnt in a rush.

Hopefully, Ill get a lot of the welding and tank done this weekend.

Wow, its been awhile since I updated this. Ive been quite busy with a new job, moving into a new house, etc.

Heres a few pics of the tank now that everything is welded.

Once again, it has been awhile since I have updated this. Between starting a new job, moving into a new house, and planning a wedding this has been put on the back burner.

Doing a lot of welding this week, so hopefully have some pics and updates for everyone this weekend.

When you press out the stem on this thing, did you have to cut the bearing race off completely? And with the new bearing set up, The flat piece on the left is the "new" bearing race, correct?

Love the work you are doing so far. I have a front end swap going on as well and Im having trouble getting this stem out. I might outsource the work to get it right but just curious.

Take care.

No, it came off when we pressed the stem off. And since were using the needle bearings now, there just needs to be that seal at the bottom.

I used a huge press to get mine out, its was like a hot knife in butter.

FINALLY got some of the welding finished and it back home. Here are some updates on it.
  • Made the rearset mounts
  • Put the KZ 440 Swingarm Pivot on the KZ 1000 Police Arms
  • Moved the subframe support
  • Mounted the rear shock (THIS MOUNT DID NOT WORK, SEE LATER POSTS FOR NEW LINKAGE)
  • Got the clip ons welded up. Going to add a little bit more to these. May put them on top of the triple.
