First full project somewhere between a Brat and Cafe

how much thinner ?
I dont recall exactly...not perfect, but really close. Dang PJ and the others talked me into using them. Like I said. No issues, but it still bugs me. Now Im Gonna order a set from Honda tomorrow. grrrrr

when measuring end play w feelers make sure shim, cam and head are pretty dang clean and dry. Oil film and dust has a thickness, you dont want to include.

Thanks guys!!! I'll be looking for guidance tips like that once I started putting the case back together as to not make too many noob mistakes. One more question, what are the opinions on gasket sealant vs going dry?

not just dry but bone dry. wipe machined surfaces super clean w acetone. just before assembling gaskets.

use your torque wrench on everything. Use some type of thread sealant on ALL hardware. When using the torque chart in your honda manual. the lower number is for lubricated threads, higher for dry. By lubricated they mean any type of thread sealant.

I like teflon thread sealant. some use anti seize others locktite. I dont care for either on engine fasteners.

Especially on soft S/S bolts to prevent galling. You can get a can in plumbing dept. enough to last 10 lifetimes for like $5 bucks.

engine all cleaned, majority of parts soda blasted just waiting for a good day/place to paint. While I was thinking about stuff in probably forgetting what's the though on all the oil seals. Is it worth it to spend the 40-50 bucks on them or are they still good to go. Test painted the chain cover with duplic-color primer and then low gloss black. Pleased with results so will probably use that combination. Still deciding about the clear coat on top. Want to get this right while I have the engine apart.

actually torque values are for clean dry threads 1 drop of oil is the rule ,DO NOT use telfon or antiseaze on torqued fasteners, it is a perfect way to stretch a bolt/threads putting way too much load on it.

Oh and I almost forgot I finally removed all those bloodly stripped screws from the block. :D God bless stainless steel alens and dremels. Wishing I would have done more performance mods to the internal from crazypj's inspiring posts but that will have to wait untill stage 2. As well I'm currently working on fabing something to go between the gap between my tank and seat I realized thinking putting leather with snaps with matching leather across top of seat and back end of fuel tank would be cool if that makes sense? now just have to find away i could install snaps on the fuel tank. Wish me luck with painting and reassembling the lower case I'll need to be in your prayers not to forget something crucial. off to start masking stuff and get out the acetone.

Quick questions.
A. I'm having a hard time deciding which route to go on tires. Looking for something with a vintage appeal, but performance as a priority. I'm just about to order the 2.15" rims from Mikesxs so I can go slightly wider. Any suggestions on those?
B. Cheapest place to get new spokes that will be powder coated?
C. What did you all pay for powder coating frame/small parts/wheels?

SOS I dont know if I will get a response to this question because my others have gone unsupported. I am trying to get my cases together but my bolts are larger than the manual has specs for. Am i mixing something up or did PO possibly replace them? I have 10 and 12's on the bottom. What should they be torqued to?

you need to look at the service manual
bolts are not refered by wrench size ,only by thread diameter thos would be m6 m8 not m10 m12
izzat case cracked ?

xb is right.

and that could be a casting flaw...but it looks like cracks to me too, starting w the dent.

Ahhhh not the bolt size. Total noob lesson right there. Now the manual makes sense. but it is a casting flaw. been there for 3 years now. first time I saw it my heart dropped. Thanks for the responses. was gonna seal the cases but lost the damn little U piece that sits in the bearing housing and keeps it in place. Have to go off to the junkyard to scavenge a new one tomorrow. Also didn't see vinegar exploded in a box my nice new NOS piston rings were in and one set had been soaking in vinegar for a week. Cant decide if this is a problem, it created some surface rust. On a brighter note my wheels came in!!

socks aboot the rings you could problay clean them up with sheet glass 400 grit top bottom only top should be krome other if face-pitted will need rejeting post sum good clothesup pics o da reengs

I decided to just play it safe and order another set of rings. Rather spend $37 than have uneven wear/cracked ring. Also found the lost U piece so will be sealing up the lower cases as soon as I get a chance. Splitting the cases was extremely intimidating at first but now as Im mocking it all up back together it doesnt seem so bad.
