I got this on Monday for $100. It is a 1973 Honda 500 4 cylinder, don't know much else. It has compression and spark but no gas. I hope to get it running with a carburetor rebuild and a new chain soon.

I'm still considering what to do with it. I definitely need to repaint that tank. Does anyone know the color of the side plate?

Welcome! It looks like its in pretty decent shape especially for a $100. Good find! Good luck with your project.

Welcome!

I say leave it un-painted. My tank is still messed up from a gas spillage right after doing my paint. The primer and flat black look is in!

I do like the flat black look, but I like the charcoal grey of the side cover better. The tank has a weird finish like a truck bed liner, rough and textured but I do not think it's rust under paint. I will find out more when I strip it. Worst case I will need a new tank. :)
I've been reading about these bikes and I think I will put on a set of clubman bars. I like that look and the bars on the bike now have a little rust on them.

I got into it after work, poking around the easy to get to parts. It looks like someone welded a piece of diamond plate over the tire as a repair. Welds look okay, and its kinda Mad Max.

From there we see a very rusty battery box, which is why the battery is in the air box. The frame has a lot of small scratches and rust spots I think I can fix it.

Next we see under the points cover, very nice. Did not expect it to be so shiny inside. The alternator cover has hex bolts installed, I am pleased.

Now there is the rust you would expect from a 35 year old bike. I see a trip to the sandblaster it my future.

This is my tank... yeah, it is that ugly. The picture shows a dent that looks ripe for expanding into a knee dent. I scraped the paint on the other side. Looks like the tank was black, painted with latex brown house paint and then rattle canned a silver color.

The PO also installed some cheap pod filters that I do not like. Sunday I get down to the real work of cleaning those carbs out and stripping the tank. I drained the old gas out of it today, it was brown. Tomorrow morning I will drain the oil and go to the hazardous waste disposal site. They only take public disposal on the third Saturday of the month and you can only do it from until noon ??? At least I know that I can help the environment between the hours of 7:00am to noon one Saturday a month.

Well, I got my hands dirty. This is after the under seat components were removed. There was a piece of gum on the fender.

On the other side is the mess of an electrical system.

More electrical mess

And just a little bit more

I have the whole thing sprayed with cleaner and washed. The bad news is I need a new rear shock on the left side. I also need all new turn signals and a new tail light.
On a bike this old are there any problems with using LED flashers and the stock flasher module?
