Fitting mufflers to exhuast pipes

I am trying to fit slip on mufflers to the pipes on my Moto Guzzi. I can't get the slip on to clamp down tight enough so I need to add some form of thin shim around the pipe to close up the very small gap ( less than 1mm) which will enable the clamp to tighten up.
What should I use for shim material? Any ideas?

I like the idea of trying copper. I tried using aluminum sheathing (similar to a Pepsi can) but I wasn't too thrilled with the result.

Any other suggestions or solutions?

What about muffler repair tape.

I like the copper because its soft. It will conform to the space. Theres a reason they use it for exhaust/head gaskets.
