Been Around the Block
Hey All,

I just tried to take apart my forks from my Yamaha SR250, but i cant get the bottom bolt off the one that holds the upper fork to the lower, the upper keeps spinning when i try to losen it off and when I hold it it doesnt do any thing doesnt losen off or tighten does that mean i stripped it? and clues as to how to get the bolts out? need to change the oil seals and the fork oil and dont really want to take it to a shop much cheaper for me to do it haha.

Cheers Jon

I think you stripped it? Cant really tell from youre description... If so, you need to drill it out without damaging the threads on the fork inners.

You need an inner tube holder.
It holds damper rod so you can unscrew bolt.

hope i didnt haha good thing i have a buddy that owns a shop fiddle with it some more here befor i give it over to him :)

when i turn it to losen it with out holding the upper it sounds like the spring is turning with it as well could that be the damper rod moving as well?

Yep - the bolt you're trying to remove goes into the dampening rod, which rotates inside the fork tube.

Given the tension of the spring isn't holding the dampening rod in place, you need to take the springs out and use something to hold the dampening rod. On my XS650, the tool is basically a 17mm (I think) allen-key socket on a long extension. It fits into the top of the dampening rod and allows you to loosen the bolt.

Alternatively, try an impact wrench on the bolt while the springs etc. are still in the forks. But at the end of the day, you'll want to figure out what tool you need to hold the rods to reassemble anyhow.

Should be in your manual - you do have the manual.... right ;) ?
