fork question?

Coast to Coast
i know this might sound odd, but i have a cb500f with 35mm forks on it, and want to put cb900 forks with 37mm.
question is could i fit the 37mm into the 35mm tree's?
i know that when i took out the forks on my 500, that there was wiggle room in the clamps, when the bolts were loose and the clamps were free from compression.
i believe that there is enough to put in the 37mm, but i want to know what you guys and gals think?

another question is, would the pivot fit my 500's neck? not sure on the sizes.
just some questions to see what ya think.
thanks,
later.

I doubt you could squeeze the 37mm in those clamps and have them hold it securely. It would create a different shaped 'hole' that will not clamp properly all the way around. You can bore the 35mm out to 37mm, but that's also a big jump and may not leave enough 'meat' on the clamps to be safe.

You best (safest) bet is to use the trees from a 900, and press a 500 stem into them. A fairly common process used on most fork-swaps. I'd be surprised if it wouldn't work on yours.

cheers

+1

Also, look up the actual stem sizes. If the lengths are close enough, you can just get some roller bearings to swap the front ends.

gl1000 (and probably a cb900) tripple trees should mount right up using stock bearings.

DO NOT expand the trees, thats stupid. also boring is a pretty bad idea as well. these stock cast parts are weak.

Did you actually look up the steering neck sizes or are you guessing? Shouldnt assume David...

i did a while back mike.

double checked...

they both use the following size...

Upper: 26 x 48.5 x 15.2 Lower: 30 x 50 x 14.4

although the later gl1000, 77-79 uses this size. Upper: 25 x 47 x 15 Lower: 30 x 55 x 17

It is possible to mill out the upper and lower triple clamps if you have a first class machinist and he's able to confirm that there's enough metal left. If you try to pry the clamps open there's a high probability of failure plus it will be oval and will not clamp well.

hey guys,

i have a cb 400 II mag wheel conversion i am putting on the cb500, uses wider tires and no tubes.
any way, the stem is smaller diameter than my 500, and the stem is longer.
the bearings look the same out diameter, but wont work due to the length.
i was going to do the re/re of the stems, but the distance between the forks on the 400 trees are closer together, than the 500.
this is why i am looking into other options, but the other thing i can do is install the mags on the 500 forks and shim the gap. i beleive this would work alot better.
and the rears i have to find the proper rear bearings to accept the mag and the 500 axle bolt, and a way we go.
i think now i am going to go this route, what you guys think about it.
thanks for the reply's
later.
