Fork Seals

I'm replacing the fork seals on my 1971 Honda CB500 k0 and I don't have the slightest clue how to get my new ones in. I ended up having to use a wire wheel/ hand drill/ dremel to get the old ones out, being that they were fused in there.

I've bought two different pairs of seals, both of which boast they fit my bike, but I don't see how they physically can. I've measured out the thickness and lengths of the slots they need to fit in and the lips they need to meet, and again, I don't see how it could work.

Has anyone else ever had this issue? Maybe I'm not doing it right, but according to you tube, you just ease it back in and with a little help from a hammer and something of the same circumference. Right?
