does anyone have a ny tricks to getting the old seals out of the forks? i have tried prying with a flat blade screwdriver.
thanks

A tried and true trick is to drive a screw into the seal (being careful of course) and then hauling on it with some locking pliers. If you try the screwdriver route make sure its as big a screwdriver as possible and don't damage the forks.

You can save the seals if you don't muck them up too bad to drive the new seals into place with. Otherwise a short length of PVC pipe the same diameter as the seals works well.

You can try heating around the edges with a torch.

I have yet to remove my seals but I bought a seal puller at Harbor Freight for $4.99!

i probably will try the screw method. maybe add some heat for fun. i think going in with the new seals will be much easier. thanks for the advice

If you boil some water and then put it in a container and submerge the fork portion with the seal in it for 5 minutes, then with a flathead it should come out pretty easy, worked great for me!

holy shit. so ive tried screwdriver, heat, boiling water, the screw method, and even a dremel. these things are not budging. i am trying to make sure i do not damage the area that gets sealed by the seal. does anyone else have some trickery? thank you.

Mine came out super easy. I got a seal puller from harbor freight. I had a micro butane torch and I used that to heat around the seal for about 30 seconds. Then I just used the seal puller and it came out easily.

The seal puller was only $4.99

good news

went to Harbor Freight today. got a seal puller and a bearing puller. bearing puller was not small enough. seal puller + boiling water = no more fork seals in my forks. holy shit. that was amazingly difficult. so thanks for all the advice everyone. problem solved.

Good to here you finally got them out, by the way does the HF seal puller work pretty well with minimal damage to the seals?

It works very well with a little bit of heat to loosen the seals up. I didn't damage the old seals at all. I also replaced the old seals with Pyramid seals that I got from ebay. People don't like them because they say they suck but mine don't leak. I think it's a matter of installing them correctly.

Their fork dust seals suck though.

I'd recommend to try to use oem seals. I've heard horror stories with the aftermarket seals.

hmm.. I found some on ebay that are all rubber, so they dont have the metal part that can get bent out of shape. They look pretty promising, have you heard anything about these?
