found A LOT of $$$$

Been Around the Block
I got a text from my mom early this morning saying I 'had to call her back it's urgent.' She has a way of making her texts sound like there was a death in the family. I called and she told me she discovered something in my top bureau drawer hidden underneath the newspaper lining. She was insinuating that she found something disturbing like drugs or porn in my drawers (which doesn't really matter anymore since I live at college. ha!). Turns out she found an envelope with $650 in it! It had my handwriting on it dating back to 2007 (high school) with a list of deposits and withdrawals I made to it. I think it's money from my high school job, holiday savings, and leftover cash from when I bought the Suzuki. I'm very puzzled to why I stashed that money away like I did and how I then forgot about it, but I'm happy to have a mother that (still) snoops in my drawers. ;D

DAMN!!!... i get excited when i find 1's or 5's (or the elusive 20) in the washer... so, what kinda bike are ya gonna buy with it?

Shit, send it this way and Ill send back 4 bikes. Ha ha... They all ran when stored, I promise...

I'm looking to buy a DSLR camera, since the one I have- 4mp, broken flash, broken zoom, is... yeah. Time for an update! Any suggestions? ;)

When you said "A LOT" i figured in the range of several "K". Stick it towards your college bills?

several k would be nice. It's funny that I was responsible to save that money and irresponsible to totally forget about it. I've got my college finances squared away-scholarship and federal loans, applying for jobs right now, should be able to pay off the debt in two years or so.

if u use the money you found and get a little more saved up get the canon t2i.. mann its a sweet camera 18 mp hd video bad ass i bought it for christmas.. lovin it..

My twin brother has one lol! I'll have to take a look at it. It might be overkill for what I'm looking for, you pay a premium for 1080p video... I'm looking for a midrange consumer-priced camera with just 720p. Hope to get a zoom lens and maybe a prime wide angle lens. I've spent hours reading up this stuff today...

im with nemo!

i found 20 bucks in my snowboarding bag today, been there for two years?

nice find.

as for DSLR. depends what you want to do with it. I'd look at a nikon D90 with the included lens if you want a new body and are new to DSLR. if you want to save some cash, get a used D70 with less then 15,000 shutter actuations. i got my d70 body for 80 bucks (cracked top lcd, ill fix it eventually) and a 18-55 EDII lens for 120. cannot beat that; i see the d70 body going for 250 bucks alone. Look around for deals. invest your money in lenses. and learn to shoot.

if you want to shoot HD video, get a HD camera. i hate people who buy DSLR's for video. learn to shoot. if i see that thing on auto all the time, then you would have been better off with a point and shoot.

hmm, you're driving a good point into my mind. The prices for DLSR's without video are much less. It seems that it's difficult to use a DSLR to record video as well-Canon's t2i doesn't have auto zoom for video, for example. Maybe a HD video recorder can be found cheap? I'm seeing some for under $100. Thanks Rocan, this is the best advice I've heard in a while! I'm literally changing my shopping strategy now ;D

think how often youll be using your camera. I got my father a Vixia HF-R10 for christmas, but since its handheld it doesnt mount well to bikes, or isnt good for snowboarding etc. if you want video on bike, get something like a go-pro (or a non brand name that does the same thing). if you want to record youtube videos on stuff like how to polish, a go pro would be terrible.

and if your going to use the camera once and forget about it, then dont get a HD camera at all.

though for the occasional once in a while quick flick, id say go with a Nikon D90, as it DOES do HD video (most DSLR bodies do now a days). you have to remember though; DSLR's are NOT HD cameras. a lot of them wont auto focus when in video, and a lot of them will simply provide HD video that doesnt look very good (white balance etc), unless if your spending thousands on a DSLR that is designed to do video.

though the canon EOS lineup (5D etc) do a very good job at both. but im a Nikon dihard, though Canon does have a better menu system.

i say go into a camera store and dont let them talk you into anything. play around, read up, and then make a decision. heck, Im glad i shot pics with my 10 year old Olympus DSLR (without changeable lens) before i got my D70, as it taught me what every basic function does. get a friend who has a DSLR and knows how to use it, and have them teach you.

I can go on suggesting for hours... easier way is for you to say what you want to do. DSLR photography can get expensive quickly. example... basic lens is an 18-55 or 18-70mm... will shoot most stuff. but what if you want to do portraits? then you need a good lens with wide aperture, something like a 50mm 1.8 or, what i prefer for indoor shooting, a 35mm 1.8. then what if you do sports photography? need a good zoom lens, 55-200, with VR (vibration reduction) or canons equivalent, unless if your shooting with a tri-pod. oh yeah, you need one of those too.

heres how my week went.

D70- 80 dollars. a steal
18-55 EDII lens, 120 bucks, used. average price.
2 extra batteries- 19 dollars from ebay. not bad.
52mm UV lens- 17 dollars.
52mm Polarizing lens- 34 dollars.

id say thats the basics to do any serious shooting. you can get away without the polarizing, but IMHO if your shooting shiny bikes or cars outside, its needed.

270 dollars, for stuff that isnt new. not even the cost of a body, but ive been shopping around for a while. buy this stuff new, your loooking at least twice that.

i already had a tripod. since i have an idea of what i want to shoot, i will have the following additions soon enough....
vertical battery grip with a shutter button and control wheel, 12 or 14mm fish eye, another CF card (2gb of raw is good for most stuff, but i want to have the extra space if needed).

you can get away with less, but the more involved you get, the more you see why you need certain things. again... if i buy a new body, i already have the lenses. THATS why you invest in lenses. you will ALWAYS need them. and shots are only as clear as your lenses.

In the end, the camera will not be your limiting factor. I will have a while before a D70 body limits me in what i can do. when i hit the wall with my Olympus c-2500l, i KNEW i hit the wall. i KNEW my shots could not get better in terms of quality, as my camera was limiting me. so what did i do? i shot better. got better lighting, better subjects etc. but that only lasted for a while, and then you hit another wall. any dslr will do all you need and more for ages before you realize that its not you thats limiting your photography.

p.s. look at the photography thread!

p.p.s sorry for long post.

Thanks again, I appreciate your feedback! It sounds like you're very passionate about photography. You make a good point about reaching the limits of the camera; kind of like how a rider should learn on a small displacement motorcycle and not on a repli-racer literbike. I'll take all this into consideration (ESPECIALLY buying used). I don't have much (actually, almost none) experience with a DSLR but I'm willing to learn. I'll check out that photography thread you were talking about, but do you know of any good sources to buy a DSLR? I read through http://www.digital-slr-guide.com/ but that seems more geared towards the higher end products. I don't even think I need the video function at this point (but like all things, it would be nice).

buying new... i like adorama as a company.

used, ebay or craigslist.. i prefer craigslist as you can try it out first. ask for shutter actuations; they are like milage on a bike.
thing with new vs used is... new= warranty. which pays for itself quickly if something breaks. though if its an lcd or something, and your handy with small electronics, you may be able to do it yourself.

exactly right on small cc vs a superbike. same idea. good luck, shoot me a PM if you want me to overlook purchase of a used body.

For now, I am going to look for a decent ultracompact camera that does 720p video. It seems that it's necessary to have an ultracompact as an everyday carry along camera. Plus, it's what I'm used to and I'll be getting video function out of it. Off to Cnet!

I'm going to spend more time researching DLSRs for now so I don't jump into it too suddenly. Gonna do some comparison shopping, figure out which would suit my needs, etc. It seems that investing in exensive lenses is more important to good photos than the camera body. That's something I can spend money on out of college with a real job.

Maybe she just knew how you really made the money... and it must have been the good stuff to overlook 650 bones!
