Well the pissing stopped... now they're taking a dump!

Got the Mikunis on the beemer yesterday after having a custom set of cables made up. (blown Bings)

No problem installing, bike started right up and was damn close to balanced!

Geared up for a shake down run and to see if the lack of accelleration was solved... rode out of the garage...

got to the end of the alley and the engine stopped... skidded to a stop on a locked rear wheel (only 6 feet)

Got it into neutral and pushed her back to the garage, tried the starter... locked.

Now whether it's a siezed starter or a siezed engine I don't know... went inside to drink :p

So I'm going to cancel the plates and start pulling the her apart and try to find the culprit... hopefully the crank will turn manually once I pull the starter and I'll find a starter with a siezed solenoid... cause that I can fix for $200 and without tearing into the engine and be riding in 2-3 weeks... otherwise I'm done for months while I tear the engine apart.

Not my damn spring I'll tell ya :mad:

Most problems only call for a beer... there's a reason Airhead riders get together for Malt Therapy sessions (communal wrenching)

Seized engine calls for good single malt scotch... well multiple single malt scotches actually ;)
 
Where'd you get the cables made? That's some weird problem to have. There's no way your engine seized by riding 100 feet down the lane. At least not from heat or friction.

Could be a transmission problem.

A friend from the Manitoba Antique Motorcycle Club made the cables for me in his shop.... pretty easy when you have all the bits & pieces.

I managed to shift into neutral and push it back so I don't think the rear drive, shaft or tranny is at fault. It MAY be the 31 year old starter... right now if I hit the starter it just clunks like it's jammed. I need to remove the starter, pull the timing cover and try to rotate the enging using the crank shaft. I think I can get the starter out without removing the engine. If that's the case hopefully the starter took the damage and the engine side of things are OK. I did just do a fluid change, pulled the heads to examine the cam shaft, lifters, rods, rockers, pistons, rods and valves... everything looked, felt and smelled OK. So either something further south in the engine nearer the output shaft OR the starter seems to be at fault.

Thankfully new starters are easy to get for $200... which is exactally how much I am saving by cancelling the insurance for a month to effect repairs. If it's the engine I'll be saving a whole lot more in insurance ::)
 
You can cancel insurance for a month? And you save $200 a month? You don't pay that much insurance surely.
 
Well it's not the starter... I pulled it off the engine and tested it...no problems...and I still can't get the engine to move with either the rear wheel or by turning the crank directly with a socket (yes I shifted to neutral first)

Bloody Hell...

It looks like the flywheel is damn close to the housing... could be I blew a crank bearing at the back end of the motor.

I'll be really lucky if I can get this done by July... August is more like it... and then it's so damn hot I might as well leave riding until the fall.

Why the hell couldn't have this happened in last year before I put her away for the winter? It must have been on it's last leg... just had to wait until spring to let go.
