Front forks won't align

After changing the oil in the forks, the fork ends sit wider than the wheel axle. The only way to clamp the axle onto the forks is by clamping one side and then force the other fork inward while clamping it. The difference is about 10mm.
Are the forks bent or am I installing the wheel wrong? Thank you guys, and girls.

These are when the wheel was installed by forcing the forks into place.

I had a similar problem with my XS1100..... wheel was on backwards so the spacing was fucked
Desmo,

I thought about it but the rotor goes only on the right side. I think I'm gonna have to take the forks out and make sure they are straight. What a pain in the arse.

Loosen the forks in the triples and turn the upper part of the fork around whilst still in the clamps and hold the fork lowers still. If they are bent you will see the lowers move in and out at the axle clamp.

BTW - did the fork lowers "spring out" when you took the wheel off?

Hillsy,

You are nuts on. I just did that and when rotating one of the stanchions, the lower fork moved closer to the axle. I only rotated it 3-4mm and the fork was sitting perfectly on the axle.
So, I do have a bent fork but I can live it for now. The plan is to shorten the forks eventually, if I can get the motor to start and run.
The forks didn't spring out when I took the wheel off, so it must have been me when I had to use a vise grip to replace the seal.

Thank you so much for the response.
